The Lute Eugene Sue.
The death of Eugene Sue. the celebrated
French novelist, is attouticctl. He was born
in I’aris in 1808, aud inherited a considerab/e
estate from his father, who was a professor of
anatomy. He studied Gingery, and served for
several years us a Burgeon in the French Navy.
After having squandered his patrimony in ex
travagant living, lie was driven to writing ro- i
maucos. Ilia first literary success was "Mu- 1
thildc, or the Memoirs ol ti Young Woman,’*
wherein, contrary to the usual custom of i
French novelists of the time, vice was punished
aud virtue rewarded. The popularity of this |
book, however, was tar e.:coded by thug of tin j
"Mysteries of Puris," The *!Wandering .low' 1
wan no less popular, aud, like the "Mysteries;
of Paris," was translated into many lungusges.|
It derives its interest not so much from the m

I mid rapidly increasing. The large proportion
' of gluten contained in wlient grow here, cou-
! pled with an early harvesting which enables
the farmer to get his crop into market sooner
by some weeks, than his Northern eompeti- '

As a writer, Eugene Sue posscs-wl gn at
powers of vivid description und lively narra
tive. His works abound in horrible nud mys-
terious incidents, and won favor wilh the
lower classes by the vigor wilh which their
wrongs and stifle rings were contrasted with the
vices and luxury of the rich, Notwithstand
ing his socialism, he has always lived very ex
travagantly, as the great popularity of some of
his writings enabled him to do. The following
disagreeable incident is related as having be
fallen him, soon alter the publication of his

the Foreign Oltlce. It consisted of a small
box containing a silver medal, with the follow

written,“For the History of the French Navy

Blowing up the Teacher.
There is a class of persons in most school |
districts who ure
find fault with the teacher They are general
ly too crude and ignorant to know or cure any
thing about his methods of instruction, but om
ly let a pecuniary orabarrosment cross hi? way,
or 'et his moral reputation be m jeopardy from
any calamity or unavoidable occurrence, and
these watchers immediately turn buzzing gos-
sipers.and repeat, with a waspish monotony,
“1 told you so;" "Just as l expected."
If the teacher is ten minutes behind time in
tho morning by their clock, lie “is an hour too
late." If he teaches them twenty minutes af
ter the time for dismissal in the evening that
is no oflense. True, evety teacher should
make it outo^joict to boas punctual as the
snn himself, but it is hard to keep true time
and the inaccurute and varying time of every
clock in the district, at the same time. The
teacher, however, must learn to bear all Ha se
fault findings aud cuffing, and endeavor to
treat with calmness and rrsp-et all his mmi-
iesa critics 1 This is easily done. Let him keep
a continuedfyresence of mind an! don, near
right us ho can. Let him treat all children
with equal lorbearanec, aud be always cheer
ful aud composed’ Let not sych trifles in the
least raffle the temper or deaden his iuteresls.
The teacher's task is arduous enough and can
only be successfully performed by attentive
study and perseveradee.
Ooc thing is consoling : the teacher Hint is
•blowed up" by such brazes, generally has an
old trick of staying up. The ccasurcsof the
ignorant andgaiusaying cannot,in the least,in-
jure the devoted teacher in the successful dis
charge of his duties, touch insinuations, arising
from such a source, take a decided turn iu fa
vor of the intended victim, and recommend
him to a discriminating community,—School
