KIT i;ARSON.
1 this day had the pleasure of seeing and
conversing with the far-famed Kit Cursou.—
tie is a mill, pleasaut man in the expression
of his face, and one would never eu*pcct him of
having led the life of daring anil adventuro
which distinguishes him. lie i3 refined in his
manner, and very polite in his intercourse; his
conversation is marked with great earnestness,
and has language is appropriate aud well cho
sen, though not pronounced with correctness
Ha has a strong mind, and everything he says
pointed and practical, except when indulging j
in a vein of humor, which is not frequent. No I
one can converse with him an hour without!
being favorably impressed; he Irusn jovial,hou- ;
cat, open countenance, and a kiadosss of heart j
almost feminine. He is universally beloved ;
here, and a favorite with all classes, Indians in
cluded. He never alludes to his career as nn
adventurer unless questioned relative to it.—
Although be isfreer.ud easy in conversation’
everything he says in regard to himself partakes
of a degree of modesty almost incredible in
one whose life Iras been an unbroken suc
cession of hardships and dangers. You may
have seen a small periodical floating about
Washington, called ‘Kit Carson, the Cold j
Hunter,’ 1 had read it, and in t.recourse ot
our conversation I asked him il it were true-
He said it was not; every statement made
11 false. He is represented in this pamphlet
as a colossal figure, when he is not over five
feet eight inches in height. He is heavy |
framed, and weighs about 170 pounds. He
is forty-oight years old, but docs not look to
be more titan thirty-five. He came to tins
country in 1S‘27, hatting run off front his em
ployer near Boonville, Missouri, to whom he I r ,
was apprenticed to learn the sadlr-r's trade. :
The facts of his life are now in the posses
sion of Washington Irving, and will, doubt
less, be thrown into the form of a hook, dur
ing the coming winter. He is a strong State*

The.Eort Defiance Wagon Road.—An inter
esting despatch has been received by the See-
rctary of War from Mr.E. F. Beale, superin
tendent for the construction of the Fort De
fiance wagon road, it is da ed El Faso, July
it-D.h. Camels were furnished to this expedi-
t.on for the purpote of testing their ua<fulness
in this country Mr. Beale writes that they
bore the journey across the plains much better
I than the mules suffering less from sore feet
and eat with avidity the food that was rejected
by the other animals. At the start they car
ried s:veu hundred pounds each of provender
for the mules, lie ex presses the opiniou that
he would rather manage twenty camels than
five mules.
