AT LA NT A ,8EPT EMBER 12. 1857 . From the Baton Pott. The Cahnt de PUnry. The Count dc Pinery is known far and wide m a beau garcon I IIo site on hie horse to per fection and as captain or colonel of the Cent Gardes, with the bine and silver antiorm, the horse-tail helmet, the tin breast plate, 4c.. h® j is tbo ideal of a dashing fellow—somewhat ripe it is tme, for he baa passed two score and live—a gallant soldier, and a Vernethcro transplanted from the Egyptian soil of one of the great Luxembourg pictures to the boule vards of Paris. This gentleman has seen much of life, and all within the last twoDty years ; for, within that time, he is well remembered as assistant shopman at Private, the glove- maker, in the Rue, de la Paix. About the year 1841, at a time when business was rather slack, and the opening to commerce afforded by the French occupation of Algiers still pro ductive of great profit, it was deemed advisa ble by the worthy tradesmen to despatch the the young man, now Count Colonel. A id-de- Camp, Chevalier of the I>"gcon of II otior Ac., to Algiers, with a lew boxes ot damaged gloves for the consumptior of French officers at the Governor's balls, wherewith to entrap the hearts of fair colonists, who ut that time, were pnt on snch Bhort commons with regard to fashion that—except in cases of presenta tion to the Governor's lady—they could oflurd to wear no gloves at ail. The young shop man was enchanted with his mission ; he hud been travelling clerk—'"commie royagear"— in his younger days, and was delighted to re turn to the old wandering life and the nomade conquests with which every Frenchman makes duel, and his military career wTH^e, If not al together lost, very mnch retardedXThcro la some question of bringing him before * «oun» cil of war, or sending him to his regiment. Yoq are aware thet every pupil received at St. Cyr. contracts a voluntary eogagement and is then sent to the school with the grade of non commissioned officer." Brown Dick.—Wc visited Col. Allen’s 1 Torse Muiision on Saturday to sec this celebra ted racer. Ho had just returned from Louis iana, where he had been in trainiug, since his failure. We regret to learn, that the gentle man who hud him in charge, thinks that the struin of the leaders in his ankles is beyond recovery, and that, as a racer, he is done.— This is to be regretted, for he bos already pro ven himself to be the fastest three mile courser that ever marked a track.—Selma R> putter Jug 31 ■ S. 13. I have just received a laige lot ol Boots A several the been more numerous than ever; nearly eighty having taken place since January last. One ol them, which occurred at the close of last week, had e lamentable issue, and originated in mo tives the most frivolous. A fact, significant in itself, connected with this duel, testifies to their frequency. When the actors in it en gaged a fiaert at Versaillee to take them to the ground, they mentioned a spot little suited for a drama of that kind. The coachman well versed in such matters, hearing what was be ing said, observed,"Pardon me. Messieurs, but I think you are choosing a bad place. I usu ally drive to Mouiins bill on such occasions.'. Thither they went. The combattauls and the witnesses were all minors. The principals were M. L ,son of a former prefect, and M. de Xegrier, son of the colonel of the 14th regiment of the lice, au officer who greatly diatiuguisbed himself in the Crimea, who is the friend of A/orsbnla Canrobert and Peli.- ■ier, and whoae promotion to the grade of general of brigade has been anouuoed in the Monitcor. The duel came off, and yonng L- , mortally wounded, was taken to the hospital of Venaillcs, wbsre be died the next day. On Hunday last bis burial took plaie. Nearly all the pupils ot the school were pres ent at the obsequies Th* siater of young L was about to be married, and her journey bad been delayed a month, in order that this unfortunate young mas might be' present. His mother, "oaunoned by telegra* phic despatch, hastened to Versaillee, but was too late to receive bis dying sigh.
