ERROR CEASES TO BE DANGEROUS, WHEN REASON IS DEFT FREE TO COMBAT IT.’*—JEFFERSON
J. II. STBBLB,
.1. W. DQWItm,
Mltort.
ATLANTA. BBPTEWBKB 17. 8157.
B^_ An exchange paper tell* the follow*
ing anecdote:
'Do you think you are fit to die 1 ’ aaked
a mother of her neglected child.
‘I don't know,’ «aid_the little girl, taking
hold of her dirty dreas with her dirty fin*
gets, and inspecting it, ‘I guess so, if I aint
too dirty! ’
The Boston Transcript on this, adds the
following:
'There is more in the remark of this preco
cious child than first strikes the mind, as the
good book connects cleanliness and goodli,
ness together.
Wire Rigging for Stipe-—The Liverpool
Courier aays that three-fourths of all the ships
now fitted out at Liverpool are rigged with
wire rope. It is described as a fourth less iu
weight, and not one-half the bulk of that made
of hemp, and the cof.t is 25 per cent, less. It is
much leas susceptible than hemp of atmospher-
io changes, and it is predicted that iu a few
years it will supercede hemp rope for standing
rigging. A recent trial of wire, hemp, and
Manilla ropes was recently made at the K ing's
dock, Liverpool: The straining tests showed
th« immense superiority of wire rope over that
made even ol the best fibrous material. The
testing of the hempen ropes proved the strength
of Manilla to be far superior to Russian hemp,
taking many of the merchants, ahipmusters,
and riggers present by surprise, os a different
opinion had been entertained by many of the
gentlemen present.
tff* The Commercial says that the paying
teller is in custody at the bank, awaiting the
result of a thorough investigation which is now
being made- The accused denies that he lias
any knowledge of the embezzlement, und
treats the matter apparently with indifference.
The suspension will cause inconvenience to
depositors only, the circulating notes which
have been taken on deposite by several other
banks and brokers generally being abundant
ly secured by State stock. The livening Ex-
press says the liabilities of the paying teller
are not known to a certainty and until they
are known the directors declined to meet the
obligations of the bank.
£9* Beebe it Co., who friled to-day, were
heretofore regarded as one of the staunchest
bouses in the street. The suspension is owing
to huge loans on stocks. It caused great sur
prise, and the feeling on tb* stock exchange
was one of general unsettlemcnt and excite
ment, with prices irregular, but everythiu > on
the decline.
£9*The liabilities of the Ohio Life and
Trust Compauy are now stated as certain ly
over six millions of dollars
IQ. A patent lor the thirty-five thousand
acres, selected iu lieu of those located by mili
tary warrants or scrip, and issued by virtue of
a special cirtificatn in favor of Wisconsin,
under the second section of the act of March,
1855, is now in course of preparutiou in the
general land office, and will be transmitted to
the Governor of that State in a few days.
JH^Several of the bonks to-day acceded to
the loan of six hundred thousand dollars to the
Erie Railroad Company, which enabled it to
pay thesix months interest on its bonds-
J9-Thcw arc mnny rumors circulating un
favorable to city banks, but they are believed
to be fhlsc.
J9- Beverly Tucker has accepted the ap
pointment of the consulate to Liverpool.
