THE CENTRAL GEORGIAN.
[FROM THE BALTIMORE AMERICAN.]
Arrival of the American.
Halifax, Oct. 12.—The steamer Ameri
ca has arrived, bringing Liverpool dates of
Oct. 2d.
EngIand.—The papers are full of specu
lations on English and French affairs. The
London papers are rabid on Jewett’s grand
expedition to the Lobos Islands, and call it
a deep laid scheme of annexation.
There have been violent gales in the
English and Irish channels with much dam
age to the shipping.' The ship Emporium,
from America, was wrecked on the coast of
Northumberland, and the crew and passen
gers saved.
Alderman Challis, M. P. had been cho
sen Lord Mayor of London.
Craft, the fugitive slave, has written a
long article which is published in the Lon
don Morning Advertiser in reply to the stric
tures on slavery in the “Household Words.”
The weather had been cold and rainy, and
the Welch mountains were capped with
snow.
Gen. Castanas, who served under Well
ington in Spain, had died and would be
buried with military honors.
Advices had been receivet^from Bombay
to the 1st of Sept., and it was believed that
a general advance would be made on Bur-
mah as soon as additional troops reached
Rangoon. Money was abundant.
France.—The public mind at Paris ap
pears to be fully prepared for an immediate
proclamation of the Emperor. It was even
said and believed that Napoleon would re
turn to Paris as Emperor.
On laying the foundation for the new
Bourse at Marseilles, Napoleon said that he
hoped that the prosperity ot that port would
contribute to advance the Emperor’s grand
idea that the Mediterranean would be a
French link. This remark was thought to
have reference to a hint thrown out by the
Government papers that when a few more
steamers were launched England would be
called on to show' her title to Gibraltar and
the Ionian islands.
The vintage had commenced in the South.
In Loire and Champagne the prospects were
moderate.
It is rumored that the Emperor of Aus
tria had demanded the hand of Princess
Vasa, and that the Empeior of Russia was
using his influence to win the hand of the
•ame lady for Prince Adelbert of Bavaria.

Anecdote Of a game Cock
On the memorable 1st June (Lord.Howes
victory) Capt. Berkely commanded the
Marlborough, and broke through the French
line between L’lmpetuous and Le Mucius,
each of superior force, and engaged them
both. Ou going iuto action the Captain
ordered all the live stock to be thrown over
board, but at the request of his crew per
mitted them to retain an old game cock,
which they (the crew) had fought several
times, and always with succes. 1 hough
the coop w'as thrown into the sea, the cock
\vx* allowed to range the deck at liberty.
In the action the Marlborough was so se
verely handled by her opponents that half
the crew were disabled, her Captain carried
wounded below', her main-mast shotaway,
and the remainder of the wen driven from
their quarters. At the very juncture when
the Marlborough was on the point ot stri
king, there chanced one of those awful lulls
in the roar.of the thundering cannon often
experienced in general action; in that mo
mentary silence, when the falling ot a rope
might be heard, the old game cock, who
bad escaped the carnage, hopped up upon
the shattered stump of a main-mast, and,
with a loud and triumphant flapping o his
wings, sent forth such a long and lusty
challenge as to be heard in every part of the
disabled ship. No individual spoke in re
ply to the homely but touching alarum ,
one universal and gallant cheer h° ra t ie
broken crew arose ; they remembered the
indomitable courage of the bird that sa
undismayed above the bleeding horrors of
the deck, and every soul on board who
could drag their limbs to quarters reman-
ned the guns, resumed the action, and forc
ed each of their opponents to surrender,

Berkelv; it was hung upon the neck of the

Revival in Atlanta.—The Atlanta Intel
ligencer of Thursday says: . • ,
“Duin<r the last two weeks, a revival has
been in progress at the Methodist Episcopal
Church in this city. We understand that
since its commencement, between forty and
fifty have been united with the church.'The
meetings have been largely attended, and
an unusual amount of interest manifested
in the cause.”
If men were compelled to give a reason
for everything they profess to believe, one
cf two things is certain; either that reasons
would become more abundant than they are
in the present day, or that doctrines would
he fewer.
