Jefferson County Outra^es-their
Origin-Who is interested in their
' • Propagation.
“Fiat Justicia.L”
.When some weeks ago, we heard of
the murder of an old, inoffensive, harm
less freedman in Jefferson county, ip the
stillness of night, by parties disguised
and heard this outrage charged upon
the Ku-Klux ; the <^rcumgtan,c,ss, con
nected with jt; excited a train of thought
j and led fc) conclpsifliis. jyjbi.ch we {wi
give tc ,o.iyr readers. Premising, we
would say that we know nothing of the
Ku Klux, if we ever sa\v £ member of
this organization, we did not know him
c V * ** r ' ' ‘
as such—&LI ye ftfryp no belief in th
existence of $ny such organization in
Georgia, apart from the Radical party
of the St^ts. A faithful adherence to
tl\s Constitution, and submission to lav
are Democratic principles, and true to
those principles, the Democracy of the
State desire peace, and a faithful ad
^ministration of the laws. The success
of the party in emancipating the State
from anarchy and misrule, and in res
cuing her from the plunderers who are
fattening upon her life blood, depends
upon their maintenance of peace and
order—and hence in every part of the
State, submission to insult and outrage
has been the rule and the cases are e: -
ceptional when goaded to madness the
people have taken the law into their
own hands and avenged their o«n
wrongs.
The Radical Party on the contrary
.owes its very existence and success to
civil strife and dissention. Born of
Revolution, and baptised with the blood
of Southern martyrs poured out in de
fence of the right of self government,
^oeace and harmony in the Union would
fbe death to Radicalism. Hence the
revolutionary outrages of Holden in
North Carolina, of Scott in South Car
olina, and hence the increasing effort
on the part of Radicalism in Georgia
to stir up strife between the two races
and if possible to provoke a conflict.
'The existence of Radicalism in Georgia
depends on its uniting the Freedmen in
their support at the approaching elec
‘tions. Bujt'fhere are thousands of th
'jypedmen who are democratic and thou
sands more who will not vote at all or
vote to rdftaso those who have befriend
ted them. How then is this vote to be
'consolidated in javouf of Radicalism
'Suppose Radical emissaries sent to dif
ferent parts of the State. In this copn
ty to burn a gin house, in Jefferson to
murder an inoffensive old negro, or to
excite the negroes’ to outrages as in
Louisville last week, and at once every
Secret outrage upon the person or pro
perty of a freedman is denounced by
the Radical presS as “a Ku Klux out
rage,’perpetrated by Southern rebels.”
And in this way, merely for party ag
grandizement, the seeds of discord arc
Attempted to be sown broadcast over
the State. " ' : ’ ‘'
We do not believe there are any but
Radical'j£u Rlux in Jefferson county
We belieVe that the murder perpetrated
near Bethany was by Radical emissa
ries. That the recent outrage in Louis
ville was a Radical mqve possibly, as
bbarged by the lehder of it, ^origina
ting in Atlanta.”
We congratulate the State at the for
bearance exhibited by the people of
Louisville and the county, that they
cli<J npt meet force with force, and wash
out the outrage upon the laws of the
land in the blood of tjip silly victims of
Radical duplicity.
The Democracy hayo nptbing to gain
by outrages upon the freedjnpn. The
Southern people’^re npt hpstjle tp them.
They wish to live peaceably with them,
to see them prosperous aud happy ; and
we honestly beli’eve that the very best
interests of the freed people will be sub
served by the triumph in the Sp,ut}i of
Democratic Principles.
From Jefferson.—W© give a sy
nopsis of the news from Jefferson as
furnished by our correspondent at
Bethany.
The Opera Housd Fraud—We
noticed last week the odnsummatiop
of this fraud upon the State by the
Government gt 4-ilanta, and that opr
readers may be fully acquainted with
th.c’.character of this transaction," .we
publish below the speeoh pf Senator
Scot', c? Floyd. Can any’ one read
this kpeeoh and not see with half an
eye that the parties intrested in this
purchase and sale were unwilling to
refer it for settlement to the people of
the State? The Senator states that
the “State now practically owns the
building for eight years." W'hy then
tills hurry on the part of the .Executive
and L> giriature of Georgia to involve
the State to the arnpuTit of 380,000
dollars? Why we ask, if it is not for
the purpose of enriching out of the
hard earnings of the people of the
State, tho e engaged in this infamous
swindle? But we confess our inability
to do justice to the subject. Read the
speech of Senator Scott yyhjeh we clip
from the Constitution.
The Chop.—The drout and intense
ly hot weather of the last week, is in
juring the cotton crop greatly. Many
farms had been injured hy rust, and
we suppose there is hardly a farm in the
county in which there is not more or
less rust at this time. Still continued
favorable seasons notwithstanding the
late spring and rust would have made a
heavy crop. But from present indica
tions, some of our best farmers, do not
expect the crop to equal by ^ the croj
of last year.
Not Dead Yet.—The man that don’t
take a newspaper. He was in our office
last week. Said he “took no news
paper, took hue two years and never
intended to take another, did him more
harm than good, made him think about
things he never would have thought
of,” &c. Sorry that the mental excite
ment caused hy reading a newspaper,
was so distressing, trust that he does
not read his neighbor's paper, that
would i.ot be honest. Where is the
Schoolmaster ?

the following annbuncemtent of prin^-

Grats’declared .‘that the Anglo-Saxon
race, from' its superior intelligence,
energy and capacity, deserves to be
ranked as thte great conquering race of

Andrew Female College, Cuth-
bert, Ga.—In’ our late visit to Cuth-
bert, we had an interview with Dr.
Hamilton, President cf this institution,
and learned with pleasure, that.beside
She usual collegiate course of instruc
tion for young ladies, the Doctor has
introduced a complete system of Phys
ical training, which we regard as of the
highest importance,. to those entrusted
to his care. The effect of this system
in relieving personal; deformities, such
as curved " spine, stooping -shoulders,
harrow contracted chest, and giving a
healthy development to the whole .jftus*.
cular system, thereby relieving dyspep
sia, neuralgia and other painful affec
tions to which many young ladies are
martyrs, is wonderful. The Doctor’s
administrative -abilities' are of the high
est orderund we commend the Institu
tion to the confidence and patronage of
our readers who have daughters to ed
ucate. Cuthbert is perhaps as salubri

A Noble Benefaction.—The

Bethany, Ga., Augus' ? 22d, 1870.
At. Editor'—The people of Jeffer
son county are in considerable excite
ment. On yesterday (Sunday) about
eighty negroes entered the town of
Louisville, and after threatening de
struction to the town in case of resistance,
they proceeded to break open the jail
and release the negroes confined there.
Most of the white citizens were absent
from the town and consequently
no resistence was made. The negroes
pmped near town wiLh the intention,
is expressed by them, to return and
destroy it. Messengers were sent to
different parts of the county and by
day break (Monday) morning, more
than two hundred armed white men
were present and ready for service.
The negroes however dispersed.
They were led on by one Cudjo
Lowery, a negro who lived in Louiy
ville. This negro, s^ij he had aqlhpyi
ty from Governor Bullop^ (o dc> all he
did; that he had recently been to
Atlanta and it was all lighb Thig
one negro was suffered to sleep in
Louisville all last night anf( (o leavp
this morning. More anon. K.
LATER FROM JEFFERSON CO.
Tuesday Aug. 23d.
The leader of the negro outlaws was
arrested this morning in east Maco^
and carried (I believe) to Savannah. A
few U. S. troops arrived at No. 11 Sta
tian to-day. Most of the negroes that
acted a conspicuous part as leaders
have been arrested. Other arrests will
be made. Awed whites are scouring
the country iu every direction. Al
though the negroes dispersed on Sun
day night, they are reported to be con
centrating in large numbers near the
Neely plantation east of Ogeechee riv
er. It hus been ascertained from ne
gro confessions that the secret church
meetings held by the negates, njnder
the-guise. . .of jeligious and pharit^ble
intentions were nothing but political
meetings in .-which were matured the
outrages now being committed.
