Arrest of Gen. .Smiiincrs.
Wo learn that Con. SttMutma, lately con-
noctcil with the Savings Bank, of Augusta
was arrested in Kingston, yesterday, the 1th
charged with the authorship of the disloya
and vUUfylng letter published a few clay-
since in the Augusta papers.
This man, we leant, has been fattening hi
.Yankee lust upon the warm sympathies ant
generous confidence of our citizons for years
and now true to his birth right, his munis
gratefulness is offered in the base and trench
crotts slanders of his people, and the crave!
treacheries of his own nature. Liko the
. Alsatian Dicer ho strikes his con tiding friend
w ith the deadly siqah, as ho stealthily light
ens his pockets of bis jewels.
Wo say, elevate all such to the distinction
of Hainan, and confiscate such means ns are
designed to aid and comfort our enemy.
We call attention especially to the
correspondence of Gov. llnown and F. S.
Bartow. - Every true Georgian should read
it.
“.Halite Deserts Diehard, am
Fondles on Bolinlirokc.”
Our Governor's defence of States right
and Georgia's Sovereignty, in reply to Mr
Bautow, is another “ illustration " of hii
fidelity to the trust we have confided to him
and his Itonmn gallantry in behalf of oui
republican loyalty. As the great Knglisl
historian has declared, that modern Demoo
cracy tends to the establishment of abac
lute power, unless counteracted by a genu
inelovo and practice of freedom, no pro
diet front the signs of the times that our re
organization may be wending its destiny tc
somo absolutism. The Impatience of con-
trol—tire strategic interpretation of Consti
tutional allegiance to law—the demagogic
fl.story—tho sttccombing of high principles
to low interests—the elevated tono of per
sonal dignity and independence, disrespected
by tlic Government, and repudiated by its
. subjects, betrays tho fearful attitude of our
new-born freedom: the threatening revolu
tion which ever triumphs over a people's
tradition. If the ruling passion of civiliza
tion is ever interest, it is equally pertinent
that the ruliug passion of a Republican Gov
ernment should ever bo loyal duty.
Freedom is the safeguard to all successful
Governments, but freedom itself cannot ex
1st without obedience to law by consent
then when self Interest and emulous oggran
dlzomont shall subvert these principles, free
doui has no longer a basis for its support, am
tho subjects of such a Government have al
ready awarded themselves a baneful annr
city or a military despotism.
We think tho usurpation of theFedcmlivi
Executive of its creative and sustainingsov
ereignties is the first approach to such a cm
tralization, and the Dm.lt.Au treacheries o
Its subjects, the last, and by which it is short
of its strength. Such transforming ngen
cios are ever pertaining to all systems of"h u
man societies that beget high places and
scllish remunerations, nnd never, until man
shall be able to deny himself of Ids sordid
habiliments will such agencies lack for repre
sentatives. Georgia may congratulate her.
