A Lynn, Massachusetts, man has invented a substitute for sole leather, which, he claims, is cheaper in price and superior in durability to that article. An Iowa man, whose wife recently pre sented him with their fourth pair of twins, has begun to fear that it is impossible to overdo the thing. The two love-sick Wisconsin girls who th other day unsuccessfully attempted to commit suicide together by poison, have since drown ed themselves. A bluff-looking Canadian has beeu victim izing sharp Portland merchants by paying them for goods with bills of a Clifton bank that failed fifteen years ago. Gen. Garfield has published an address to his constituents explaining why he thinks it unjust to ask him to resign his seat on ac count of his action on the Back Salary bill. The Providence Journal thinks the Govern ment ought to have made an appropriation for both Secretary Seward and Senator Sum ner, in consideration cf the injuries they re ceived. It is asserted that a Vermont family, living on a retired road that had been blocked with snow for several weeks, were lecently found to have been keeping Monday for the Sab bath. William H. Fry, mail agent on tbe Winona and St Paul Railroad, has run 120,400 miles, has never missed a regular trip, and has never bad an accident of any kind happen to his train. Keeping hotel is profitable in Florida. One owned by a stock company lately de clared an annual dividend of 35 per cent. Another, when open but six weeks, divided ten per cent. State Senator Joseph Dysart is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor of Iowa, on the railroad tariff is sue. The Des Moines Register says he is “of our best type of Iowa men.” Minister Washburne has sent $25 to a gen tleman in Illinois, to be used in defending the suits instituted by the Chicago anti Alton Railroad Company against the farmers who refused to pay more than the legal fare. The Democratic Legislature of Kentucky has found it necessary to pass a special law to insure the punishment cf kuklux, and yet the Democratic papers of the North assert that there are no kuklux, and never have been any. A meeting of the Governor and Council of New Hampshire is to be held in Concordia to-morrow, to hear the rival claims of Hon. A. F. Pike and S. N. Bell to a seat in Con gress, a3 representative from the Second Dis trict cf the State. He lives in Banks county Georgia, his name is Henry Jackson, he is 115 years old, has never had a day’s sickness, and, alas ! says that he has “never belonged to a temperance society, but has been a good, honest drinking man ever since he was a boy. ” A correspondent of a New naven paper suggests that the city give up the sole cap ital to Hartford on condition of receiving $500,000 for the scientific school, which, he claims, will do New Haven more good in in five years than the capital will Hartford in twenty. It has been decided to hold the convention of Congressman to consider the agricultural, manufacturing and commercial needs of the South in St Louis, on the 13th of May. The President, Vice President and Cabinet are to be invited to be present. The mititary conventions te bo held in New Haven will cause a change io the time of the anniversary exercises of the Yale Divinity School in New Haven, and they will take place on Tuesday, May 13, instead of Thurs day.
