The Augsburg Allgsmeins Zeitung, one of
the oldest and ablest independent chroniclers
of news in the world (having been founded
in 1708,) raises a warning voice against the
“ring” tendencies, which are rapidly making
the press of the Continent corrupt and degen
erate. It eays the power of the daily press is
being transferred to bankers and landowners.
In Berlin only three or four independent pa
pers are left; m the other cities of Prussia the
“liberal” journals have passed into the hands
of joint stock companies; in Vienna, the daily
press is corrupt and servile, and the few
really independent German newspapers are
curbed by the severe administration of the
press laws.
The principal newspaper ot Lorraine, the
Zeilung fur Lothringen, published at Metz, hag
a peculiar and chameleon like life. In the
morning it comes out as a half sheet, in
French; in the evening as a full sheet, m Ger
man. The for is entitled Premiere Edition,
the latter Zseeite Ausgabe.
An association of master barbers in Berlin
have decided to publish an organ in the in
terest of their craft, and to call it Der Butegel
(The Leech).
“Gulliver’s Travels” has been translated
into Gujerati. At Sarat a new dictionary of
this language has been published, containing
22,000 words. Gujerati is used by the Parsees.
Mrs. Frances Elliot’s “Old Court Life in
France’’ is a bitter, bad book, in two volumes,
crammed with bad grammar, bad history and
bad taste, m about equal proportions. The
scenes and descriptions of the book are
neither true as history nor entertaining as ro
mance.
A new translation of the “Institutes” of
Justinian, by Thomas Erskine Hallow, has
appeared in London. It is translated and
edited with care and skill.
Roberts Bros, will begin their series of the
works of Camille Flammarion with the
author’s last work, just issued in Paris, “Ite-
cits de l’lnfini” (Stories of the Infinite). The
author^ a firm believer in the plurality of in
habited worlds, and is a spiritualist of the
highest type.
The world renowned series of “Murray’s
Handbooks” has received an important addi
tion in “The Cicerone; or, Art Guide to
Painting in Italy, for the use of travelers,”
by Dr. Jacob Burckbardt, edited by Dr. A.
Von Zahn and translated from the German by
Mrs. A. H. Clough, widow of the poet and
scholar, so well remembered in New England
circles. The author bears the highest reputa
tion in Germany as an authority on the histo
ry of art
A Woman’s Rights Paper (La Donna) is
published at Venice, and is edited by Mile.
Beccari. In a late number it is stated that
an application to the Italian Government to
admit women to the great universities of
Turin and Rome was met with this reply:
“There is no need of a law to permit women
to enter the colleges, since there is no law
which prohibits their doing so.” Upon this
hint the Italian girls have acted, and four of
them are now attending a course of philoso
phy in Rome.
An English reviewer points out the fact
that at the present time it is the novel, and
not the ballad, that forms the nation, and
that the school of sensational writers, who
almost monopolize the popular reading of
two countries, are doing the English language
a mischief that can bardly be cured. Tbe
still worse effect upon the public taste and
morals of such novels as are poured forth from
the pens or the Braddons, the Broughtons,
the De LafRames (“Ouida,”) the Woods, and
many more, cannot be measured.

her come the previous eight, taking a quan
tity of her mother's jewelry, and had boarded
the one o’clock train for this city. Her name
was given, with the request that it be sup
pressed, as she was of one of the best fami
lies in that portion of the State. Unfortu
nately the dispatch arrived two honrs alter
the train, and when detective Cranmer visited
the depot he, to his chagrin, found the bird
bad flown. Diligent inquiry failed to learn
anything of the girl, until the afternoon Mr.
C., by chance, met a gentleman to whom the
girl had sold a portion of the jewelry. He
said that when first approached by the girl in
his 6tore he had refused to purchase unless the
girl could bring him a permit from her guar
dian or parents. She answered him, “Very
well,” and left the store. A half hour later
she returned with a written permission to sell
the jewelry, and signed in a neat lady-like
hand “Miss Jennie Williams,” whom the girl
represented to be her mother. Everything
appearing proper, the gixl having given her
place of residence in the city—fictitious—the
gentleman purchased, giving her $100 for a
watch and chain. That afternoon, although
the detective did not come np with the girl,
he learned that she had purchased a ticket for
New Orleans and taken the train, going back
directly by her home from which she had fled
the night previous.
A dispatch to that effect was immediately
sent to the city marshal previously referred
to, and who was the young runaway’s cousin.
That evening when tbe train arrived at the
town where they lived it was quite dark. The
girl bad seated herself on the side of the car
farthest from tbe platform, and when tbe train
stopped she lowered her vail and appeared to
be sleeping soundly. Her cousin, the mar
shal, tapped her on the shoulder and asked
if she had not better get out and go home.
“Sir,” she replied in a disguised tone of voice,
“you must be mistaken. I am from New Or
leans.” That would not do, however, and a
moment later she left the car, in company
with her cousin.
The only reason sbe assigned for her
strange conduct was that she had a strong
desire to go off to some distant place and
then turn up two or three years later aa an
authoress of mark. She had been reading
“Oaid<’s” works, and thought that all that
was needed to make her a second edition of
that talented authoress was a slight chance
and a good deal of mystery,
