Mar. •hall of this city, suddenly, of congestive chill, aged 60 years, 5 months and 28 days. Notice of funeral in future Issue. HANDSOME STORE TO RENT. New York, May 23.1873. A letter to the Sun says Charles W. Ford has un doubtedly been tendered the Secretaryship of the In terior. George McDonald, implicated in the Bank of Eng land forgeries, has been committed to the custody of the United Slates Marshal, to await the action of the proper authorities. Tbe heavy purchases of gold to-day, in anticipation of purchases by some of the leading bankers, aggre gated eight millions. The appropriation for tunnelling the North river baa pa seed the Legislature. Tbe local liquor option bill, amended to soil the Governor's views, passed to a third reading. The effort to insert tbe civil damage clause failed. Professor Waeeeman, who was garroted and robbed in Brooklyn, is doad. Tbe German bankers are buying gold. month. Of coarse, several old friends have been renamed for the season, but the novel ties are more in color and pattern than fabric. Grenadines, both silk and wool, will be much worn this summer, and a black silk grenadine, with black satin stripe, will make a most elegant and useful addition to every lady’s wardrobe. These should be made with a long skirt, trimmed according to the taste of the wearer or her modiste, and accom- K fried by a tunic and bodice, or polonaise. I the latter case the polonaise should be that known as the blouse—uo. Many very pretty mixtures of colors are worn. For this purpose tbe different shades of stone grey adapt themselves more readily to the juxtaposition of bright colors than any other of the neutral tints; for instance, grey and pink, grsyand green, or for older ladies, grey and brown, go admirably together. Ol these apple green and a particular cool shade of grey have a most charming effect together; the color is either used simply as a trimming, or form9 a large .component part of the toilet All the above observations will Apply equally well to white muslin, which will be inmfiaite- ly greater favor than ever; in fact a set of white muslin flounces oi different widths, edged with lace, and planted or finished with ' 1 ’ 1 ’ u "Tounce by the iuser- ping cords, will be a necessary wardrobe of every young lady IOWA A B I INTEND MOVING INTO MY NEW AGRI CULTURAL BUILDING, corner of Alabama and Forsyth streets, early in June, I offer the STORE I NOW OCCUPY for rent Call early and let me know If any of tbe Fixtures are desired or not. Prompt .tteMion given to *11 l> noas entrusted to his cure. a bouillon made ia Lion of two adjunct to tightly fitting, which is destruction to a thin material, bnt setting to the figure, and con- fined at the waist by a ceinture. If a grena dine toilette is thns made, trimmed with black, it can be worn over any color, either the whole dress, or simply the polonaise. If it is trimmed with bonillonnes edged with lace—tbe prettiest and most elegant style—a colored ribbon to match any under-dress with which it is worn can be ran in, in a very short time, and adds considerably to the finished and distingue appearance of tbe toilet Tbe ont-door morning dresses are made just to touch, or eren to clear the ground. The favorite style is unquestionably with po lonaise, and of these there is an immense va riety of shapes and makes. If made of an unlioed material, they are better ent so as not to fit too closely, and worn with a waistband outside. Jacket bodices, with waistcoats, are im mensely worn in all kinds of materials and for all occasions. Many polonaises are made open at the bodice and skirt, to show the waistcoat; in other cases the gilet is imitated by simply placing a piece of different mate rial or color over that part of the bodiee which would display it Lace, handsome fringes, white muslin and lace plaiting*. or silk gTenadine ruebings, aud plaited frills of the same color, are the most fashionable ornaments. Ruchings and bouillonncs are very much worn in all mate rials, and certainly are the lightest and most summery-looking trimming of any. Dinner and evening dresses of all kinds, if not intended for dancing, are made with very long trains, sometimes with a slightly-trained under-skirt and a long manteau de cour, or a long-trained skirt with tunic. Low bodice and short-sleeved dinner-dresses, with lace polonaises or tunics and fichus, are very ele gantly worn, and have a very becoming and nch effect. Many modistes have sufficient taste and tact to arrange lace flounces on a skirt without cutting them; this is slwsys de sirable, and can be done iu a variety of style and shapes. The stand-up frills, or frsises, of lace or plaited tulle, arc most fashionable for low or high dresses: in fact for the latter hardly any thing else is seen. Of course, very stout la dies. or those with short throats, wiU not think of adopting these fraises, which would be tbe most unbecoming style imaginable. Ball dresses are a mass of puffings, frills, and niches, made of the lightest possible ma terials, and trimmed with flowers in sprays or cordons. The skirts are only a few inches on the ground at the back, and a convenient length at tbe front and sides for danciDg. Many long skirts of silk or satin for indoor wear, whether for afternoon or evening, have a plaited flounce ot etiffnet lining the hem, across the back breadths; thrs causes the train to sit splendidly. Almost ail eilk dresses have a narrow closely-plaited muslin flounce tacked to the hem, so as to show a tittle below; this preserves the edge of the skirt, and gives the appearance of a muslin petticoat of equal length. The number of muslin and lace pelerines fichus, gilets, and gilet fichus worn ia incal culable. For morning wear, colored cambric and washing sateen take the place of the silks, sarins and China crapes worn in the afternoon and evening. Tbe mantles of the same material as the dresses, when not made en thills—that is, showing the figure—are generally longer in tront than at the back. The pelerines that only reach the waist at tbe bock sometimes have two square ends forming a tablier in front. The pelerimes "Marie Antoinette,” crossed over the chest with long ends tying behind, have made their reappearance, as w* prophe sied, for this month, and are being made in transparent and thin materials by tbe Court modistes. At this stage the Warm Spring Indians made some hostile demonstrations, and the captured squaws refused to speak further. In the stampede Mrs. Hendricks alias Simpsey threw her child away, hoping to escape, and the child was killed by the fall. The captured squaws are Mrs. Wechmatel, two sis ters of Boston Charlie, tbs mother of Black Jim, and a girl. No braves were captured. Two Indiana have been sent to the Modocs, offering them terms of surrender. General Davis reports that no troubles are appre hended from the Klamaths. LATEX. The Modocs must be fifteen miles away. Tbe squaws taken before Davis talked much, but gave little information. The Modocs number fifteen men and fifty women and children. The Modocs won’t talk with Davis alone. Davis sent word that he did not want any peace-talk, but would allow them till Friday to surrender; after that he would kill every Modoc who was found with a gun. A private dispatch as w.eived at Washington gives no idea ol the real situation. Ybska, May 23, 1873. The Hat creek band, numbering fifty men, women, and children, have surrendered and been placed un der guard. There were fifteen warriors, among whom are Bo«ra* Charles, Shocknssty, Jim Cenley Head, Charley Head, Doctor Franklin and others, the best fighting men Csptain Jack had. The surrender appears to have been conditional. It is supposed that no wariors are with Captain Jack, whose whereabouts ia unknown. Fairchild lays that there are twenty back in the cotton wood. The disaffection is confirmed by the captain of the band, who says he parted with Captain Jack eight days ago. The army is divided into squads to pursue Captain Jack and his party.
