“That Bundle of Coupons
Letter from Mr. Conley-
Editors Chronicle and Sentinel:
I notic* in your paper of the 16th innt. a
letter from Governor Bollock in reference to a
‘ handle of coupons” found in the executive
office at Atlanta. In corroortation of the state
ment made by Governor Bollock, I ask space
in yonr paper for the following facte in refer
ence to said ‘'bundle of coupons”:
Whilst I occupied the Executive chair, I re
quested the financial agents of the State in
New York to send me an account current of
tbeir transactions for the State. They fur
nished the statement at once, and in trans
mitting the account they sent to the Execu
tive office a large number of coupons,
which they had paid for the State.
These paid coupons, together with the ac
count, were sent to the Treasursr of the State,
where they properly belonged. Dr. Angier,
the Treasurer, returned the coupons to the
Executive office, refusing to recognize their
legality, etc., whereupon I directed my Sec
retary to eeal them np in a package, label
them and deposit them in the safe in the Ex
ecutive Department, where they were subse
quently found, “while engaged in overhaul
ing office papers recently." These were tbe
only coupons in the office when I left the Ex
ecutive chair, and they were there because the
Treasurer refused to receive them and no
other disposition could be made ot them.
These are the facts about the “bundle of
coupons which had been paid but which
Bullock had never concealed or destroyed.”
