THE HORSEMEN OT THE CZAR—MAEVHLOCS
RIDINo.
Writing under date of May second, of a re
view held in SL Petersburg in honor of the
visit of the Emperor of Germany to the
Czar, the correspondent of the London Daily
News says:
The great attraction of the day was the cav
alry, and that far surpassed anything which I
have ever seen. The two elements of excel
lence were, of course, the horses themselves,
and the horsemanship of the riderp« Can
anybody explain the peculiar charm about
Russian horses? Without presuming to
answer my cwn question, I think I may
point out that one secret with train
ers here seems to be to educate the horse;
to make him trustworthy, faithlal, ambi
tious: and to dispense with all those con
trivances, which, in more civilized countries,
crush the spirit out of the poor beasts. In
what other country can one see horses like
those which dash along the N'veska so free,
and fresh, and gracefully? In what other
country do they have such a glossy skin, such
swan-like necks, such delicate limbs? And
in what other country do they off-r such ma
terial for cavalry? One must reflect, too, that
Russians of a certain class are born like Arabs,
iu the saddle. The horse is a member ot the
family, a brother, a companion iu every ad
venture. The Russian Government li:ul, there
fore, good material; but it has employed it well,
and the proof is the superb horsemen who to- j
dav galloped along by Kaiser William and his ,
German officers. The Russian cavalry has |
the ordinary divisions found in all Conti- i
cental armies—namely, hussars, drngooDS,
cuirassiers, uhlans, «tc., —as well us some
species peculiar to itseli. I pass over the foi
mer, and only call attention to the horses.
These sleek and muscular beasts had evi
dently been selected as carefully as the men
themselves. For each battalion they were all
of one color, now a glossy black, now a rich
brown, now a light gray, and the unifor
mity seemed to extend even to their 8ize,
shape and motion. The effect was singularly
striking. The Tebeck and Cossack cavalry
have been so often described that there is
nothing new to be said about their appear- ^ ^
ance. The detachment which took part in j rtcTftecuincaaea of RHEUMATMatTackoFULA^

the ceremonies of to-day wore bright red
jackets and a sort of far hats of the same
color, and rode chestnut ponies. On their
hacks carbines were strapped, and in their
hands they carried long red lances. They
led the cavalry division. The first-circuit
oi the cavalry was merely for inspection; the
second was for evolutions. How impatiently
the Cossacks went through the first, and how
eagerly they entered on the second. The
ponies, even, trembled with enthusiasm. As
the cavalcade approached the Emperors, the
riders settled firmly iu their saddles, loosened
the reins a little, and—the word is given!

me not do negative injustice, however, to the
rest of the cavalry. After the second turn
around the field the whole body formed at the
rear, opposite the Emperors and the amphi

a commission which many English readers
will appreciate—than Irom the Seme to the

past ten she had completed the first fifty
miles, making it in some five hours and forty-
five minutes. She was then given a rest of
three hours and a half, and was started at a
little past ono on the second fifty miles. At
half-past seven she had completed it, having
made the first hundred miles in fifteen hours,
which leaves thirty-three hours lor the com
pletion of the other hundred. She made tbe
last mile of her first hundred yesterday the
fastest of any—five and one-haif minutes.
Those that witnessed the feat say that tbe
mare showed no signs of fat ; gue, never sweat
a hair, and trotted off to the stable to feed at
the end of her day’s labor as briskly as though polite the Kimball House,
she had just come from the barn.
Of the second the same paper says:
Wednesday the first one hundred miles was
completed, and at half-past seven o’clock the
mare was driven to the stable apparently in as
good condition as if she had only traveled
one-quarter of the distance. Y’esterday morn
ing when taken oat of the barn at 5 o’clock
to complete th* trot, she seemed & little sore
at first, but soon warmed np and commenced
her day’s work with wonderful ease. At ten
o’clock she had completed 31 miles, and was
withdrawn until four minutes past twelve,
p. m. After this rest, in which she mani
fested no signs of weariness, she made her
next a-ven miles in one hour and two min- |
ntes. No pains were taken to keep a regn- j
lar account of her rate of speed, but in gen-,
oral terms it averaged through the day about
six minutes and five and one-half seconds per .
mile for the first fifty miles, and seven mm- 1
utes and two and a half seconds for the sec- '
ond fifty miles. After the rest given the mare i
—from seven until nine o clock ia the even-! ^

would make her two Lundred miles easily.
She pursued her even gait, and a few minutes
past one o'clock this morning completed the
race, making her last mile in nine minutes
and thirty-one seconds. Thus she won the
wager, and in three hours less than the time
given her. She trotted off ibe track seein-
ingly unconscious of the marvel she bad per
formed.
