How O’Brien Picked One of the Bays Up. A Desperate Gang Broken Up, From Memphis Appeal. Ou the night of tile seventeenth of June, 1871, the messenger of the Southern express company, on the north-bound train of the Mo bile and Ohio railroad, was robbed of his safe and contents, amounting to six thousand dol lars in currency, near Meridian, Mississippi Th« messenger having no local business to at- had allowed himself to fall into a “dose," when he awoke he missed his safe. On the arrival of the train at Meridian, the mat ter was promptly reported to the com pany^ officers, but for so ^ etime no clue could te had to the perpetrators of the robbery. Attest suspicion was directed to a settle ment or colony of negroes who made their homes in the mountains about Meridian, and who were proven to live by robbery and plunder. Their huts were almost inaccessi ble, as they could only be reached by perpen dicular ladders. The company's detectives made a raid upon this ‘'colony,” aud suc ceeded in ascertaining the names of the rob bers, several of whom were shortly after ar rested, including the ring-leader, Wash Crosby. Crosby's capture was effected in Mobile, but while being conveyed from there to Meridian he msde his escape from tte Mobile chief of police, thoagh supposed to be securely hand-enffed at the time. Be fore he escaped, however, he con fessed that the robbery was execuU d by himself and o hers by secreting then § selves on top of the express car, and then entering it in their bare feet while the train was in motion. He also stated that they had attempted like robberies several times before, but were frustrated by the vigi lance of the messengers, who were “wide awake with theirfarms by their side.” After SUMMER RESORTS. Washington, June <>, 1873. At 11:45 o’clock to-ilay, Gen. Crocker, the warilfu of the jail, proceeded, with a few oth ers, to the cell of Tom Wright, heretofore con victed of the murder of Kogershi, to read the death-warrant He was bronght out from his narrow cell into the passage, where he straightened himself, towering up like a giant in size over the spectators. He was dressed in a blue coat tlack pant-, white shirt, with out a vest, and wore a black slouch hat Gen. Crocker, who seemed much affected, proceed ed to read the death-warrant, and in con cluding shook hands with the prisoner and expressed the hope tnat he was pre pared for the change. Wright, who had taken the matter quite unconcernedly, smiled in reply. The guards then proceeded to remove the fetters from Wright’s bands and feet. To do this it was necessary for him to sit down, and he turned to General Crocker and asked him for something to sit npoD. His gray blanket was brought from his cell, and he dropped on this. He remained quiet while the rivets were drilled from his heavy irons. Father Wiget had, meantime, placed a crucifix in his hand, which he held steadily. Before the irons were off, Wright whispered to General Crocker, asking if lie might see his fellow-prisoner Young, the colored man, charged with the murder (A the drover in Armory squafle. A few minutes after twelve, the procession, with Gena.
