GOV. HKRSCHRL V. JOHNSON
Displays very poor taste in the receut covert
attack made upon Governor Smith, in a
speech delivered nt the banquet given him by
the Macon bar on Saturday.. The i cession
was very unfit for such a speech -being a fes
tal board to which he was invited to bring,
not his prejudices and his bitterness of di ap
pointment, but his genial smiles and his good
humor. It is a mere matter of taste, how
ever, and Gov. Johnson is at liberty to talk as
he pleases. Talleyrand once said, we be
lieve, that “every time yon appoint a man to
office you create ten enemies and on«* ingrate.
There is certainly no doubt but that Governor
Smith has fully realized the first 1 alf of this
sharp epigram.

may be furnished from any quarter.
Nothing can be clearer than that, if you
respite at all, for the purpose of Hiving the
murderer’s soul, you should respite enough.
“£. C.” mentions one week! Why one
week? Has he a formula for saving soul* in
one week? If he has, or if one cun be
formed, the respite should no longer be loft

Savannah, Ga., June 4, 1S7;1.
One of these days, when the light of inves
tigation is let in upon the Southern Claims
Commission, there tv ill be disclosed an amount
of remarkable swearing and cyphering that
will astonish every one. Hundreds of the
claims brought before this commission are
mere trumped up affairs^ having no more
substantial basis than a fickle memory, a fer
tile imagination, and a batch of false affida
vits. This county (Chatham) alone 1ms pre
sented claims amounting to $l,o()0,000 ( and
of this snm'from $200,000 to $300,000 is rep
resented by negro claimants.
These negro claims are mest preposterous.
For example, some of these blacks occupied
cabins within range of the shells of the Fed
eral gunboats as they came up the Savannah
river. Everybody knows what sort a struc
ture a negro cabin is, and that $50 would
cover the cost of one. Yet in the claims
presented these cabins figure as rtsidenccs
worth $3,000. Notwithstanding tlio fact that
under the laws of Georgia a negro could not
hold property, these dusky claimants are
now asking Uncle Sam to reimburse than

Two negroes on tbe place were questioned and
told a very straight story as to the quantity
of rice on hand when Sherman completed
his inarch to the sea. Alter a series of
crosi-qnestions. which did not lead them
from their original statements, they were
asked why they had sworn to a totally differ
ent story. They were amazed at this, and
persisted that they bad never said anything
bnt the trnth, and though they might have
used different words, their estimate as to the
quantity of rice on hand had always been the
same. These, of crarse, are not the words
used by the negroes, who are simply illiterate
field hands, but is the result arrivt d at by the
agents of the Government af.er diligent ques
tioning and explanations. 9
It was further elicited that the written state
ments to which these negroes had sworn were
never read to them, and they were entirely ig
norant of the contents of the documents.
They were told to tonch a pen, and did so,
and then to kiss a book, which they did. That
was all they knew about it. As to the con
tents of the grocery store, they were found to
have consisted of a few hams and sundries of
little or no value. Yet there are people in
Savannah cognizant of most of these facts,
who believe Dillon will be paid every dollar
ot his claim. The United States Assistant
District Attorney at Savannah also has a little
claim against the Government for thirty bales
of cotton. This is modest in comparison with
some of tbe negro claims for marble top fur-

aught save themselves, and so grew to love
each other strongly — bo deeply, indeed,
that the passion after a while obscured
their reason. Then they secretly plighted
the troth to each other, and took
op the relation of man and wife.
A few brief months of wild happiness
followed. As was inevitable, the aeciet ex
posed itself, when the betlirothed wife whs
evidently about to become a mother. Then
a scene of recrimination followed. The
young couple made the excuse that they
hod promised themselves to each other, and

was bon. As might be expected, when tbe
passion cooled , tbe eonple looked nr.on each
other with changed eyes, and each came to
tbiok that tbeir choice would have been dif
ferent bad they not been thrown together in
a common household. Hence it happened
that they quarreled, and finally separated.
Each m jeelona of the other, and each do*
apised the other for yontblul weakness and in-
discretton. Letters passed between them,
containing recrimination, and some of thetr
strange nuasivts came into tbe possession of
the young parricide. Tannts upon his mother
angered him, and there ia reason to believe
that he totally misunderstood the reflections
mode on the subject of his own illegitimacy.
He thought his father reflected on his mother’s
chastity after marriage. Fired witli false
chivalry, be did not atop to question his
mother, and the mother had natnrally con
cealed her weakness from her son. It was
enough for him that a slur bad been cast npon
her name and hia own. He took his father's
life, and thereby published hia mother's early
frodty to tbe world. Her best friends lament
this more bitterly then that murder for which
her son is imprisoned.
