Every day the prisoners ore taken to a chapel so arranged that they can see no one save the chaplain, and him only through an iron grating. And thus is the order of devo tion observed. Wardens are constantly on the watch, lest for a slight instant they, through the whole of the service, depart from the rigid rule of “eyes right.’ They must look steadfastly at the preacher; must raise and lower their prayer book with the elbows squared, and all at ouce, like soldiers at drill. They may not scrape their feet without having afterward to explain the movement. They scarcely wink an eye or sigh without danger of rebuke or punishment, poor wretches. SUMMER RESORTS. Mr. Beecher is evidently leading his people to the acceptance of a modified faith in what _ is known in religious circlea as “Universal- j Oeo. w. Williams, ism,” and therefore delivered yesterday to a | ^ ILUAM Birnif., congregation of the usua! magnitude what might be considered a companion discourse to that preached on Sunday week, in which “Universalist” doctrine was set forth in all the attractiveness and glamour of Mr. Beech er's familiar eloquehce. The text selected wa^ the ninth versa of the sixth chapter of St. Matthew. “After this manner therefore pray ye, Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.” Mr. Beecher commenced by asking the fol lowing questions: Who may say this prayer? Is it a prayer limited to the use of the secta- liar, or is it universal ? M»v it be employed COmmiSSiO!! Merchants, by every one that denires to be oettef? Is it his title? Does it, so far as anything can, set lorth in an address the holy nature of God, and to which our thoughts must address themselves? Have we the right to determine tue government of God, and the providence of God, from a title such as this? Io our time no subject is more in men's thoughts than the midst and bounds of the true nature of that government under which we live and by which we are fashioned in our higher life. All government depends for its nature and price upon ihe character <>f the Su preme Governor; from his will comes the supreme law. This is a universal prayer. The lowest, the honest, ibe best, the worst. the most cultured, the devel oping savage who has just put one loot before the other in his upward faith, all mav draw near to God by’ this sacred appellation. XAMINATION—THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND Ml >N- day, 19th, 2uth and 23d iniit. SEIIMON—By Rev. James Dixon, D.D., of August executive power only, but in its nature itself. When this is not accepted it goes tosoow that mac h.iH been deceived. The essential quality of truth is the same that man has with God, and therefore man can argue from his own personal inspiration and from the family gov- tia >* 25(h incinsiv«- ernment to the divine government. Letuslook jnneia- «od3i at what a true government includes, leaving out ail the feebleness and imperfection, and looking at the only true and familiar govern ment. Mr. Beecher, from tbis point, pro ceeded to sketch the form of family govern ment and to trace its analogy to that of the divine. He said, first, that children are con nected to the parent by true and distinct ties iu nature; second, that the family was made up of parents and children who are essential ly connected by its own economy. It is a lit tle separate kingdom of its own; its object the rnle of the children. Its interests sub ordinated so as to bring the greatest amount of happiness to its position. Thus it was or ganized as ▲ COMMONWEALTH. seeking a common end and a common good. In such a commonwealth there must be obe dience, and, if obedience, the means of en- | forcing it. Every family government has in it physical coercion. The distinct peculiarity of the family government is its personal re lations- Common rules and principles are ! employed by a visible father snd mother. Every true lather and mother governs for the sake of the children, and not for the sake of j the family. This is the paternal government ! This is the government that is personal. The fact that a government by law exists is en tirely consistent with a paternal and a personal character of a divine and moral government. Just now the tide of discovery sets strongly towards the method by which God governs the world. Men aTe thus driven into the idea that there is no other government in the world than one of law. Our whole duty is said to be in finding out, as last as we can, what are the laws of our condition. Men are beginning to scout the idea of a personal government. It seems to me that law may be quite in ac cordance with a personal government. Every thing in nature may be under the personal 1 cognition of God, just as over a personal cog nition of the natural and animal kingdom. Mr. James Greenwood has published a frightful account of the silent system which is in operation at the Holloway Model Prison, in London: It in an offense for a prisoner to speak one i word, and he is never addressed except in : whispers, so that he may be in prison two years without bearing the natural sound of the | human voice. The effect of all this is so ter- j rible on the mind that prisoners will speak ! out io desperation, at the risk of any punish- 1 inapt, rather than eudure that horrible ai- I lence. The prisoners never see one another, bat remain in perpetual solitude. One poor wretch, driven to desperation by nine months’ solitude and silence, recklessly broke ont in Mr. Greenwood’s presence: “ For God’s sake, Governor, pot me in an other cell. Pot me somewhere else. I’ve counted the bricks in the cell I Am in till ray eyes ache.” The request of the tortured wretch was refused. There is a fine hole iu each cell, and as the wear shoes of India rubber soles, the prisof^eip can never be sore of being alone.
