THE FOURTH AT WEST END. A Visit to Camp'S Spring and to the Old Brewery — Printers Rnstieatlng » An Agricultural Scene—Improvements at the Springs—A Jolly Crowd of Iron Men*—Beauty on the Lake —A Rich Song—Some Stieet Car Equality, &r. v .. « . .1 And thus ended our Fourth of July IS presenting a hopeful .. . . . ._ J . .. “ i End and vicinity. In common with the various pleasant suburban rus tic resorts contiguous to our high and healthy city. West Xnd, with its numerous interesting surround ings, was not without s Hebald representative on Friday last—the day once most memorable to every American citizen, whether at home or abroad. Tasking a “laat-lins" street car, with " West End” paintedXm both ends, at a little past 3 p. u., in com- _ pan* With a diversified-bnt genial trio of nang fflry 1 °-rr t d T »*‘ g^tiing and bnaiaass-looaing End, in which, aa is its usual wont, ch?erfu1n?ia and quietude seemed to reign supneme— every face and determined will, which, combined with good health and fine society, at once suggested the utter | — —- - impossibility of its becoming anything less famous \ and flourishing than the Gste City itself. Passing rapidly through the business portion of the village, TEK and by the cool, beautiful and really charming reai- [ dances of Messrs. Adair, Wilson and others, we in duo time reached the terminus of the road and our first ob jective point, CAMP'S MINERAL SPJUTNfi, where, at that early hour in the afternoon, but few visitors had congregated, and those mostly of a ••for lorn" temperament, who apparently preferred solitude and self-commune to the gay and bustling throngs which almost invariably visit the place later in the day. Some time was here spent by your reporter and ! his thirsty comrades—(mads so by the hot and dusty ' scenes of Atlanta)—in quaffing the refreshing and ex- ! hilarating waters, smoking xnild cigars, lounging at j ease, inspecting the premises, and noting the con- ! stant arrival of new comers, as every passing fifteen ■ minutes a car would arrive and depart. The grounds j of the pjrk are admirably adapted to a beautiful plca- e and healthful resort, which they are fast assum- eluding the lake, the girls, ye “ bold navigators,” the aged gentlemen, the jolly singist and his friends, the Hong Kong geese tnd beautiful little boat, and pro ceeded to retrace our steps to the spring and station, where wo found the crowd largely increased and rap idly increasing. After taking another drink from the healthful spring and casting a parting glance at the still "wabbling” negro and mule, we took tho first street ! car for the city, in which, though somewhat crowded, our party all managed to get seats. The “ pilot,” par- ; ticularly, was well situated until wo had traversed near a quarter of the distance, when tho car was "spoken and boarded” by a ginger-cake colored dam- acl, strongly intent on a ride and a seat withal. She calmly viewed the crowded seats but for a moment, and then, with the energy and perseverance of a Con federate General, the "gushing yaller gal” boldly planted herself between our " pilot” and another pas senger, almost sitting on and obscuring the person of the astonished typo by gaudy, wide-spreading append ages. Seeing the situation at once, our philosophic friend "held his position at all hazards,” and, wo are glad to state, reached the city in safety, but fully im- *t P 1 ® 8 ®®* 1 , no doubt, with the strange effects of the Civil “ * Rights bill. sit to West J. Particular attention given to the cure of Summer Complaint, and Teething Period of Children. Menin gitis is not dangerous when taken in time. This treatment gives a white and soft skin, and everybody wil learn to treat his family for ACUTE DISEASES. Forest Grove PLANTATION. bly overgrown with cumbrous grass, weeds, and other spontaneous vegetation, all of which, we were assured by a visitor, will soon be removed, together with every superfluous growth at all calculated to mar the natu ral beauty of the place. Mr. Sternheimer. the genial and energetic lessee of the Spring and grounds, is rap idly erecting booths, bazars and various cozy retreats for the better entertainment of the numerous visitors w hom he msy reasonably expect to have duriDg the entire »eaeon, provided some satisfactory arrangement can be made in the matter of classifying the street | cars. THE w ater Is cool, palatable and at once refreshing, while its fine medicinal properties have already beeu demonstrated and fairly established. Connected with the spring is a neat and commodious refreshment saloon, where may be had all the various delicacies, both fluid anfl edible, common to first-class relreshment sa- loons—excepting, we were incidentally told, everything calculated to make a strong man weak, or a weak man strong. Wa merely took water " t-trait” and the near est seat, and then watched, with earnest curiosity, the agricultural mampuvres of A BLACK “SOVEREIGN,” who, with that worthy coadjutor, a preciie and cau tious mule, was pretending, or tiding to pretend, that he was plowing a luxuriant and promising pea-field which had taken firm root among the rooty chapparel ground on the gently undulating slope at the northern side of the enclosure. The scene was one for a pic ture; unite any Southern mind at all familiar with the peculiar characteristics of the two co-laborers be fore him, this mule and r.egro would have provoked at least a hearty laugh. The little trees were various and the roots numerous; the mule was lethargic but firm; while the darky, no doubt fully impressed that the day w as the " Glorious Fourth,” and he was dese crating a " good time,” mentally, we suspect, let slip many a cu*6 word mod naturally produced even in the mind of a fellow capable of enduring much rest and many rugged obstacles. A LITTLE TRAMI*. Although the day was warm and the " typos” not c*er-agi)c--one of the party invariably drawing down near 200 we resolutely ventured on a tramp to the old Brewery, a distance of some three-quarters of a mile, tud now owned or leased, we believe, by a Teu tonic city gentleman very rurally inclined. We made ! the trip in s little time, and, going through the wood3 to make "cut-offs”— being cautiously piloted by a! •* knight of the stick” who had often ch»«ed the noc- I prajjg MAGNIFICENT PLANTATION, LA ING O turnsl an d^ui suspecting coon—we came upon the, the Etow ah river, five miles frem Kingston, is north aide o^he institution, where is erected A DANCING PLATFORM, ■ -nja 4«aWw'« irom, bu* connected with, the main building and adjuncts—saloon, beer tables, shooting- gallery. flying-jenny, Ac.—by a substantial littie bridge spanning the neck or fountain-head of A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE LAKE, <>ne ..f the most pleasing and attractive features of ail the surroundings. Here, on this platform, like pearls among dumb-bells, were several charming young ladies from the city, with their gallant escorts, who no doubt were making as much of the " Fourth” as it was pos sible to crowd Into one day. Our " typo” friends, anu especially the " mlot,” gazed with intense admi ration on the scene presented—yet, spoke not a word, as they were all Domestic gentlemen but one, and he a confirmed bachelor. The joyous party before us w as evidently a select one, gotten up impromptu to while away the tedium of a city holiday. In striking contrast with the hopeful youth and fascin.ting beauty before us, were SEVERAL AGED GENTLEMEN, whose gray, venerable locks and thoughtful, yet cheer ful and ruddy faces betokened good lives and clear consciences, seated in a group on the music stand, talking, we doubt not, of the many changes which t. fiy had witnessed, and recounting, with secret re gret, the many errors and mistakes of youth, together with the dead spirit of that Eternal Past which no longer finds pleasure in those scenes and festivities in which they so once loved to engage. THE OTTIRR SIDZ. We crossed over the little bridge and found a de lightful shade and pleasant breeze iu and all around the Richter mansion. For fear of an accideut, the pleasure of a circular ride on the flying-jenny was de clined by our fat printer, with whom we had expected to spin round like a top in the innocent bark mill ex ercise; and, being neither " dead-shots” nor "dead beats,” we intentionlly omitted all target practice, and gently meandered into the saloon sitting-room, where we were at once regaled with a cooling drink and A bTlRRING, HILARIOUS bGNG, | both issued from the adjoining room. The latter commodity was unique iu the extreme; and had we not known that “ the greatest minds do often differ, whereby collisions and collusions are sometimes pro duced, we would certainly have sought out and phmented the " man of iron” who got off such a rich and racy vocal effort on this sccaaion. The sentiment, though not exactly like that of some of Will 8. Hayes' parlor gems, was unmistakably to the point and very highly appreciated by his jovial companions, who gave loud and frequent encores. Our stay here was short. We had a sudden presentiment — why, we cannot tell, but had it—that the opposite shore was the most inviting precinct just at that particular hour of the day. Superadded to this inclination was the positive assurance, given by our wide-awake "pilot,” that this "free asd easy” combination of “the hardy sons of toil” belonged to lhatclass who believe in first making things red-hot, and then moulding or re-rcll_ ing the material to " suit your taste.” This idea was unpopular to our mind, and we took steps accord ingly. Wo liked the boys, we admired their musJc, and would have shaken hands, but, feeling a nervous repugnance for THE "RED-HOT” BUSINESS when plied outside Ihe mill and foundry, we quietly nudged the three disciples of Faust and suggested tha t we recross the " beautiful river” or branch to the platform, from whence no sounds other than the mer ry talk and musical laughter of gay and Joyous maid en* greeted our now eager and suspecting ears. We rec»o«*fcd, leaving behind the still reverberating cho rus of a "red-hot” song by a "red-hot” man, the bar den of wUm strains seemed to be all about a "wake’ 1 and its attendant coincidents. BEAUTY AFLOAT. Rafter our retreat to ihe opposite shore, which f gallants, with the] respective charmers. embarkcd^Ibrmerry boat rid e on the placid bosom of Richter's rotosotic looking lake, in which attempt to add to their already bri ming hearts of mirth, we ware sorry to witnets a * ual failure, it seemed that none of the boys under, stood anything at all about navigation or tbe beautiful science of propelling and guiding a miniature side, wheeler, though she be loaded down to the guards with the moat graceful charms and exquisite loveli ness. Every effort to shove off. back out, go forward turn round, or move "leawsrd,” proved futile, and, to the chagrin of all parties, and the utter disgust of one pretty Mbs, in particular, they had to forego the an ticipated e xcursion, and get out at best they eould. One of the type-manipulating gentlemen of our party mildly suggested that the masculine marines of tha* noble craft (with naroe unknown) were a set of blasted land-lubbers who ought to be drowned for not going to MB. HOMEWARD BOUND. Alter taking a last fond look at the lovely mass of disappointed beauty before us, we bade a silent bu t Leirt shaking adieu to the <lU e surroundings. In.
