Confederate Reminisences. To Tins Editors or ted Hkbaiji: As one of your readers, I beg to express my j gratification in discovering that you are de voting some space in your valuable journal to “reminisences” of the late “War between the States.” I am gratified because I believe you are preserving in this way the truth ofhis tory. Mere romances are for the inflamed present; facts are ior the future of reflection. I have in my possession a few facts which I would be pleased to preserve for this future. In this I desire to give to you the history of the firstyhostile shot sent from a Southern gun at the stars and stripes—the past and the present emblem of oar nationality. It is strictly true. On the 20th day of December, 18C0, South Carolina in convention assembled, formally disoived the connection of the State from the Federal Union of States. Many in Atlanta ; remember this day. It was celebrated in i Atlanta. A detachment from the Atlanta Greys, with the writer of this, as Lieutenant j commanding, fired one hundred guns, and HOTELS. Madison House. With him it was “my mother, right or wrong, my mother.” Well do I remember the result of the firing. Before five guns were shot—in the lull uniform of a surgeon of the line, cocked hat, boots, spurs, instruments, and all—appeared our old friend of manly im pulse, generous heart and accomplished edu cation, Dr. D'Alvignv, now living, and, I hope, appreciated in Atlanta. Also, do I re member “Major” Steel, as every one then knew him, the philosopher of the tripod in Atlanta, and his remarks. Coming up to the battery of two guns he said: “Well, what in the name of the devil does all this mean V” The guns were fired—one round hundred— and two days afterwards away went this indi- i vidual to Charleston to find out what it did mean. . * Arriving there, the meaning was evident, j It was biood—war—or the independence pf j South Carolina. The Prolessor stood calmly, without a word from his lips, at gun number one. A moment > only to adjust his range and the “come to” I shot was tired. All sailors know that this is | not a hostile gun. It falls in front, as it did j in this case, of the vessel, and is intended to discover the nature and the intentions of the cralt. After this shot, and about one mile and a half off, Professor Stephens shifted his posi tion to gun number two. This he left to his gunner. The emotions of the man were now evidently mastering the Professor, and the soldier on duty; but it was a conflict of a moment. The cadets were drilled in those days, yes drilled in every thing that goes to make up a man. On came the “Star of the West.” Tbe only notice she took of the “come to” shot was to send up to tbe hal yards at her rear mast a garrison flag of the United States. The sun was just then rising beyoni’the ship and the sea breeze blowing with its usual steadiness. The writer knows now why the Professor was lost in the man; he knew it even then. As this flag unfnrled, the command was: “Boys, it almost breaks my heart, but num ber two firs T* Nine or ten shots were fired; some took effect The “Star of the West” went back and we know the remainder. ^ The Professor was afterwards a gallant Gen eral of South Carolina infantry, wounded at Sharpsburg, and is now a simple, earnest, elo quent clergyman of tbe Episcftpal church in his native State.
