It seems be had been operating for the company in the vicinity of Tuskegee, Ala., where he hal collected and appropriated funds, gambled off one mach.ne, and gave a bill of sale for his horse and wagon to a saloon keeper. He was arrested there but managed to escape, and made his way to that city on the «arly morning train of Tuesday. He hail for some time been given to dissipation, which protably led to his troubles. McNulty was committed to jail last afternoon on a war rant issued by Judge Williams to await a requisition lrom the Governor of Alabama. Tbe Rome Commercial of Friday aaje: “We pab- lish the proceedings of the Convention that assem bled in Rt(aca. on the 29th of July, to devise ways and means for buildicg a steamboat to run between Rome and Carter’s Landing. We rejoice tbit this en terprise has taken such d< finite shape, and that the building committee, appointed at a previous meeting, were instructed to proceed at once to build and equip a boat for this service. Now that there cau be no doubt about the boat being built we suggest that it be nimed 'Reaaea,' in honor of tbe little town that has worked so nobly to sustain the enterprise.” Marion McKenzie, a young man of this city, sold his property in Rome, amounting to sixteen hundred dol lars, on Monday last, de.serted the wife that he had recently married, and ran cff with another woman. Ihe Cartersville Exprert says that Col. Lewis Tum- lin and Capt. Wm. On and after to-day, all transient advertise ments for the Herald must be paid in ad vance, excepting in cases where the adver tisers are regular patrons. We are compelled to adopt this course to prevent the accumu lation of a large number of petty accounts on our books, which call for more clerical labor than they are really worth. Societies, associ- tions, etc., can very well empower their secre taries to pay such small accounts as news paper bills generally are. This change is not made from any distrust of transient advertisers, as, in a large majority of cases, we have found them prompt in pay ing their bills. Our business, however, has increased in other departments so largely that we are forced to exact advance payments, for the purpose of avoiding the necessity of em ploying additional clerical labor. We trust that our friends generally will ap preciate the motives which prompt this rule, from which we have determined not to devi ate iu the fnture. Theatrical Society. ACTORS AND ACTRESSES AT LONG BRANCH. A correspondent of the Boston Post, writ ing from Long Branch, says: A very distinctive social feature of Long Branch, aud one of iu most attractive, is the dramatic element of its society. No other watering place iu tuis country has so large a representation of “the profession” as this. As soon as the regular dramatic season is over, when the green curtain has dropped not to be raised again for weeks, the green-rooms are deserted, dressing-rooms left bare and empty, their occupants rushing away lrom town and work to the sea-shore and idleness. The the atre that has been the scene of actual trials and triumphs, mimic happiness and feigued an guish for months that are past, is left unoccu pied except by painters, whiteners and frowsy (scrubbing women, while star and stock, di 4 Thoughts HIS ACTIONS AND JOURNALS AND Edmund Yates writes from Paris to the Herald as follows: From the accounts of the reporters and so far as one can tell by the expression of his face (let them say what they will, he is a farouche looking vagabond, with a perpetually sombre almost bang-dog air !) the Shah is having a good time in Paris. This is easily intelligible when it is remembered that the official receptions a*id organized fetes are much fewer here than they were in London, and that the Persian polygamist has conse quently much more time for his own diver sions. And it is of this lime that he thinks and makes the most Whenever it is possible he denudes himself of his jewelled uniform aigrette, and slipping on a plain frock coat and an Astrakhan cap, goes off on a nocturnal promenade. Like most barbarians, he is ex ceedingly childish, and the other night took the greatest delight in playing trentete- quaranie lor macaroon cakes in one of the little toy kiosks in the Champs Elysees. The game was at its height when he was re cognized, and a cry of “The Shah !” arose. In an instant, as if by magic, the crowd round him was immense. He siw that flight was inevitable, but he could not fly without his spoil. “Mes macarons,” he cried, aud gath ering up the cakes which he had just won, he beat a hasty retreat. The insatiable curiosity of the Parisians regarding their guest has spurred the reporters of the journals to the commission of great feats of activity, and the acquisiticn, or more probably the fabrication, of stories abounding in detail is immense. How he walks, how he talks, how he eats, how he drinks. Are all noted down by these Boswells so small. How bis suite will not sleep in the beds pre pared for them, but roll upon the floor; what shops they visit and w’bat purchases they make are all regularly set forth day by day in journals to which the discussion of politics is forbidden, and which arc too well acquainted with the ta&tes of their readers to enter upon any large or serious subjects. Iu what other civilized country, for instance, would you find a long paragraph devoted to a descrip tion of the Shah's chemisvde-nnit, and of his steJ ol Mage trappings and grounding*, . habits lmmedinte i y before retiring to rest are living their own individual lives, uuinttr- Wh b , jo r( , m rnpteJ by call-boys or peremptory summons Alabama News. from enterprising managers to early rehearsals, land their flight always takes this direction, with very few exceptions. You hear of Char lotte Cushman at Newport, but no other name famous in stage annals is besides bers there, where she holds a social rather than a profes sional position, and is not so much Miss Cushman the actress as Miss Cushman the charming woman at whose hos pitable home in Borne so many of her country people have been entertained. The “Hamlet of a hundred nights” has a villa and drives a phaeton at Stamford, but he is as conspicuously solitary there as he is while playing his favorite character in an ordinary stocked theatre. “There's no one beside him, and no one above him- he staod- eth alone,” as he always does. But here there is a large dramatic circle that is not only a part, but a very important part, of so ciety. It gives a tone to the social life, adds a vivacity, brightness and originality that every other plalsi cf the kind lacks, and does not know how to supply. Persons that have been mysterious behind the footlights, are pro nounced on actual acquaintance most charm ing. Young ladies find that their dramatic idols are not quite so unlike the rest of the world after all. They are surprised and a trifle disappointed that their hero of “Kose- dale” is actually an elderly family man, still young-looking, however, iu spile of his years, increasing rotundity of person and incipient baldness. They quite lorget that Lester Wal- !ack was tin ir mother’s idol in their girlhood, but the mothers don't forget, and they give a sigh for their lest youths, aud remember their own illusions, as they see thtir daughters awaking from theirs. “Fancbon,” the un happy, persecuted clild, is transformed dur ing these months ot resting into a contented wife and happy mother, taking genuine com fort in her summer home, elegantly and per fectly finished in # every detail. Say what yon will, this is the most fashion able andgMMgvable set at the Branch, and quite ibMMBtExclusive. It is by no means easy to Rato, an an trance, and, look as loug- nglv as ^UPPj£i9ro*ou will not, unless yon are very fortunn^get bidden to the breakfast or dinner or the evening meal that some one of this circle is always making for the rest. There is a freshness or charm about members of the dramatic profession that is refreshing after the stereotype life of the hotels. They are connoisseurs of wine, and good judges of horse-flesh; 6omo of the finest horses and most elegant turnouts that appear on the av enue are owned by them. Their constant habit of study makes them familiar with the best dramatic and general literatuie, and the fineness of manner disiifcij’ed upon the stage is carried about with them con stantly. and they are instinctively and by habit tlegant in address, and remarkably so in speech. The women are artistic in dies*, aud original in conversation, seldom inane or commonplace, possibly a trifle egotistic, but you can forgive them that for the charm of the rest. They are all. men and women alike, keen students of human nature, and with a quick sense of humor they catch the absurdities by which they are surrounded, and lay them aside like good economists for future professional use. You, sir or niadame, are by no means conscious that you are being so closely studied, so sharp ly, yet not ill-natnrally criticised, your pe culiarities so carefully noted; you are utterly ignorant of tbe fact that yon are serving as a model, your very ignorance serving both yourself and the student in good stead; and there is after all a chance if you recognize yourself next winter, when some summer so journer here shall bring forward your peculiar traits and foibles in some characterization that is successful because it is natural. You will laugh and applaud with the rest, never dreaming who was the original of the charac ter that so amuses you. If you did recognize it, would you be annoyed? Why should you be annoyed at tbe delineation? lion are de lighted w hen one of your ' ‘ set ” Adopts some trick or caprice of your own, making it a fashion by the adoption; you are eager to catch something from some other one, aud ape another person s manner; it is only a play of “give and take” society through; why should these people not have their share? They would have it whether or not, and you may as well submit and say yes to them with a good grace. But the probability i.i that yon will fail to see yourself as others see you, for with your characteristic traits another per son’s will sorely be mingled, and while you will see the one tho other will escape you. an would have thought it worth while gravely to set forth that alter taking four turns round the garden, during which he consumes his last pipe, ihe Shah returns to his bedroom, which is on the ground floor, undresses himself, puts on a garment of white silk, long—reaching to his heels and tied round his neck with a gold cord, but does not take off his fez until he jumps into bed ? Accordingly, he performed his toil ette <le nuit in his dressing room, and with stu diously steady step advanced towards tbe con jugal couch. Madame looked at him for an instant, not angrily, be was pleased to remark; on ihe contrary, to his astonishment, she burst inlo a peal of laughter. “Don’t yon think,” she said, “before lying down, that you had better take off jour hat?” Ho had been so intent on assuming sobriety that he had forgotten to remove his head gear. To resume. Before dismissing this ques tion of gobemoucherei I need scarcely say that the French papers teem with stories relating to the Shah’s domestic life, all of which aTe more or less seasoned with what is called (/ros set. You will understand, without any further indication from me, tho little turns ol double \eutendre and indecent jtersijlage which those stories take, and how greedily they are de voured aud repeated by a population which deiights in such nastiness. Aud His Majesty seemed much disappointed when formed that the laws of Great Britain would not admit of the ratification of such a bar gain. A somewhat quaint story is told in tha Church Herald, published in London, of a Baptist grocer who call* d upon Monsignor Capel to complain that his daughter, having surreptitiously {attended a st: vice at the C.itheilral, had renounced her misbelief. Monsignor Capel listened with demure ur banity’, and ended by inquiring in what \ he could assist his visitor. “Well, the fact! is,” exclaimed the grocer, “nxy daughter used to help me in the shop, and I want to know whether she will be obliged to inform her confessor, who has long b*en a customei mine, of the little tricks we are obliged to use in our trade !” The Monsignor replied that, if the Baptist’s daughter were a good grrl, she would be bound to disclose all that lay on her conscience. “Ah, well, if that’s the case,” cried the grocer, “I’ll just join your church too; for I should like to give him my own ac count of the matter. ” BOOTS AND SHOES. iu Boot# aud Shoe*, Republic Block CARPETS, MATTINGS.
