THE TOWN OF SUFFOLK. ** Is this Suffolk? ” muttered McBride con temptuously, as he thrust his long neck out of the car window, and gazed upon the sleepy looking town that lay blinking in the sun shine. “Yes, m.isKsa; dat is de name ofdis place,” answered a son of freedom that had the inevi table waiter of dirty lunch you always see at Virginia railway stations, couched expectant on his left hand. “Won’t you tek a nice piece cr briled jphicken? ” “ Well, fellows, if this is Suffolk, and the Dismal Swamp ain’t any bigger thing than the town, then I bo hanged if I want to dive into it.” And, to be sure, the little town did present a poor appearance. It looked like a town in a trance—placid, easy and contented with only one man in sight in all its streets, and he stretched at full length on a pile of shingles, apparently trying to induce a drowsy dog to do some sort of a trick, which the dog seems too lazy to attempt. The main street is very broad, and is ornamented with two rows of live oaks, which, by the way, seem to be the only live things in the place. It reminds me of a Georgia town in one respect; all the chim neys are built on the outside of the houses. This barbarous habit prevails, as we have said, to an alarming extent, and each house looks as if it had an elongated wart on its back. The town has two thousand inhabitants. (This statement is a sop to those who love sta tistics. I do not know' whether it is correct or not. For their sakes I hope it is. I may throw out the remark here that I am not at ail to be depended on in the figure line. I usual ly guess at my statistics. In pure romance I consider myself reliable, and something of an authority.) The Honeysuckles crawled out of their train, put their trunks in their coat pockets, and started on a pilgrimage for lunch. THE MAN WITH THE DOG. The man with the dog being the only hu man in sight, we drifted, as by a sort ot des tiny towards him. I do hope that man’s dog was flattered by the fixed resolve with which bis master confined I attentions to him, to the utter exclusion oF^ne Honeysuckles, al though they had by this time approached within two feet of him. “Hallo, my friend!” He looked up and we saw that he bad only one eye. (From the devotion with which he had stuck to the training of his dog we had long since found out he was a one idea man.) “How do you know I’m your friend?” said he sternly, gazing at us out of his one orb reflectively. Honeysuckle—taken aback—“Well, we didn’t kiioi" it, but supposed it would be all right.” •‘Y r es, may be you did; but don't put on no airs with me; I’m a straight up and down white man, I am, I hope. Jump, Pup, jump—ps-t-t, jump!” He made a panto- mine of “jumping,’’ with his hands, | while the dog gazed at him with a melan- 1 eholy gaze, as one would gaze at a mad man. j Every Honeysuckle looked around the de- i Got me a gun V" says McBride. | “ I consider as I’m a straight up and down I mao. The Dismal Swamp is a vast body of half- submerged land, fifty-three miles long, aud about sixteen miles across. It has never been fully explored, and numbers of people have been lost in the attempt to get through it. No one lives in it except a few shingle cutters, who send their shingles to market by the Nansemond Canal, which penetrates its upper i edge. This canal w*s built by a company, of j which* Gen. George Washington was the first , President, and he personally superintended the building of it. The shingles I am sorry to say, (very sorry,) is falling off. In I the midst of the swamp there is a huge 1 lake of black inky waters called Drummond’s Lake, and it is on the edges of this lake that ( Dred, the famous fugitive of Harriett Beecher , Stowe bid himself from his owners. This is \ the only real objection I have to the swamp. HENRY 8. EDWARDS,) JAMES M. BALL, Special Partner. jy27-dlawGw Mangunrsf, Alloy; Paints. Wines, U«t ons, etc. List of charge P. O.
