A frowning front of stone, five stories high,
has the appearance of being the house, but
it's only the shell, a sort of stone fence. ,
Passing a spiked gateway yon are in a court* 1
yard 40 feet deep and the house is 900 feet j
long and old and gray. The servants about j
the place are thicker than leaves in the fall
end specially fat. They must keep a dozen j
butlers who weigh 300 lbs apiece, and a lot of ,
footmen, any one of whom could go as a side \
show. Out to the awning-covered front i
comes one of the beef-eaters, his hair white- i
washed with something looking like lard and
lime. He shouts, “Kerrige nv me lud!” !
One ol the fat herd outside echos tbe cry,
and from some shady nook in the court up
rambles tbe ‘•kerrige.” Down tbe steps
backward tumbles one of the 300-ponnders, j
another and still another. One opens !
the doer of the “keriige,” a second
gives the driver his orders, and the
third is highly ornamented but entirely use
less **’nd a snuffy little old man, with neck-
kerehiet awry and a seedy bat and trembling
hands in worn old black gloves, gets in tbe
team and is bow led through tbe gates, while
ell the big beef eaters reverently bow. This
!S “bis Indsbip,” and he’s one type of * •lad-
ship." Tbe other is younger, b*> a flower iu
bis button-hole and wears la vendee-kids, parts
his hair in the middle, has one eye preter-
hftturally large troni blocking ttp the other
with an eve glass, “aides in Wotton wow ’

3n the window till G, dtn-es-XRd wines till 10 or

dancing in the Argyfc rooms till all hours ot

of Wales and religiously followed by the bulk ;
of the aristocracy.
’Twirt Life and Death.
A SEVERE STRUGGLE.
Yesterday two gentlemen and a ludy visit- •
ing Xew Saucelito lor a pleasuring, concluded
they would engage a boat from the wharf, and ;
set out to spend some little time in fishing.
They rowed below Old Saucelito, where a rope '
with a heavy stone attached was thrown over
the gunwale, and tbe boat anchored. The
nfternoon was spent in fishing, up to 2 o’clock,
when preparations were made for returning
to the wharf. One of the parties commenced
to haul iu the anchor, w hen, unfortunately,
tie leaned the boAt too much over, and
she tilled with water and capsized the party
into tbe bay.
The mishap was immediately noticed by a
boatman on shore, who, at the time, was using
a spy glass, and he immediately put ont to
their assistance. Meantime one of the unfor
tunates bad struck out for the shore. The
lady, who at the time Gf the capsizing bad
become insensible, sunk under the blue tide,
but coming to the surface for a second time,
the other gentleman seized her by her long
flowing h*ir, which bad now become loosened,
and swam with her to the boat. He had suffi
cient strength to just keep her head above
the water, and held her in this position until
she regained her consciousness, when, in her
fear, her struggles became so desperate that
he was forced to let go his hold, and she sank
once more. On reapjiearing above the waves
the second time, he caught her
by her tresses, and thus maintained
her above the surface again-until her return to
consciousness renewed the previous struggle,
the sinking, the iaint and his renewed effort
to save her from drowning. The perilous po
sition was perceived by the Captain of a
schooner lying off Old Saucelito, who imme
diately ordered a boat to be manned and in a.
very short time tbe gentleman and ludy were
rescued. On being taken from the water the
man who had so bravely fought ’twixt lite
and death, became inseiasible from exhaus
tion. Both parties were taken to Old Sau
celito, where everything was done fer their
comfort, so that they were enabled to return
to the city by the late trip ot the Princess.

There seems to be a certain fascination
about English barmaids lor Englishmen
whom ore would naturally suppose would
select their lady loves from a higher class.
The late Earl Delaware committed suicide
on account of Miss Anna Nethercote’s death,
a person to whom it appeared he was very
ranch attached. When he first made her ac- '
qoaintance she was a barmaid at one of the
Eaglmh watering places. 4
It would seem from an action ot separation
just instituted in Scotland that these bar- I
maids do not bring happiness, even when
their admirers go so far as to marry them.
Kir Hew Pollok, a .hard-drinking young man.
when at Scarborough, in December, ISTo, met
a barmaid, wrth whom L»e became so infatu
ated as to marry her. Lady Pollok is now
endeavoring to obtain a separation, with ali
mony to the amount of XI,000 per annum, on
the ground of an extraordinary series of acts
of cruelty towaids her. including setting the
frull-dogs on her, and repeatedly beating her
since tin; date of ber marriage, iu June, 1871.
Kir Hew denies the chief charges of cruelty,
-u*dexplains that during his absence in Amer-
ioo» eome years ago, he contracted a habit of
(frisking to exceas and ot frequenting drink
ing barn.
He says that when she wuk a barmaid at
Kcarborough .-he continually supplied him
with drink, and she was perfectly aw .ire be
fore her marriage of his failings. He admits
having drunk to excess since his marriage,
but denies ever having intentionally hurt tbe
pursuer. He has all along intended and
still intends to treat her kindly, and regrets
any acts of roughness of wLicli he may
have been guilty. Any such acts, he says,
must li*ve been due to his unfortunate
failing of drinking to excess, and her irritating
conduct. In regard to sonic of the grossst
acta of cruelty alleged against him, he admire
that, under the influence of drink, be may
have sworn at and spoken loudly to Lady Pol-
fok: but he adds that she is not a person ol
refinement, and that she has all her life been
accustomed to associate with persons of rough
manners.
