THE CAPTURE OF
TENANT THOMAS P. PELOT, C. S. N.,
IN JUNE, 1864.
Our people are all too familiar with the
rapture ol the Water Witch, which occurred
in .Tune, 18C4, for us to enter into any de
tailed account of it here. Indeed, the fol
lowing letter from a correspondent of the
Norfolk Virginian, who participated in the
alfair, really one of the most daring and suc
cessful of the war, gives a more graphic
account than any we coaid furnish. At the
time of its occurrence, as our people remem
ber, tbe great achievement was a topic which
excited the people everywhere within the
limits ©f the Confederacy, and clothed the
brave men who were engaged with glory.
The name of the gallant Pelot will grace the
pages of history and descend to coming gen
erations as one of the bravest who sacrificed
his life in behalf of the “Lost Cause.” We
herewith publish in lull tbe correspondence
o! the Norfolk Virginian:
A few days since we noticed that steps had
been taken in the States of Georgia and
Florida to erect a monument to the memory
of the gallant Lieutenant Pelot, who fell in
the capture of tbe Water "Witch, in June,
18G4. We give below an account of the ac
tion by a participant, who also won a name
in that action. We will also state that he
has a drawing of the scene of the capture,
which will be photographed for the benefit of
the monument in question. The article is as
follows:
Among the many brilliant achievements of
the late ill-fated contest was one (the capture
of the Water Witch) which, for desperate dar
ing, has perhaps hardly its parallel in the an
nals of the 44 Lost Cause.” Having seen in
the Virginian a notice of a monument to be
erected, in bis natire State, to the memory of
the chivalrous young leader who met his fate
in the successful struggle against overwhelm
ing numbers, it has occurred to me that a
plain statement, by one of the expedition,
might not be without interest to your many
readers, especially as at the time it was barely
mentioned in the public prints—pressed out
of sight by the thick-coming events of greater
moment, borne on b/ the steady sweep of the
storm-cloud which early in the coming year
was to scatter to the four winds each vestige
of the doomed
4 ‘confederacy. ”
Our little fleet had for some time been lying
in the muddy waters of the Savannah, per
fectly inactive, and our officers and men were
growing tired of the dull routine of life aboard
ship, when Lieutenant Thomas, P. pelot, C.
S. N., then executive officer of the iron-clad
Georgia, proposed to the flag officer, Commo
dore W. W. Hunter, to allow him to fit out a
1 o t expedition for an attack on some of the
enemy's gunboats lying just off tbe coast.
His. request was granted, and the expedition
was soon fitted out, and on the first of J-une
we started from the fleet with seven barges,
the crews composed of seventy-five men and
officers from the several vessels of the squad
ron, all well armed with pistols, cutlasses, and
the requisite boarding apparatus. We pro
ceeded down the river, going through a nar
row channel from Warsaw into tLsabaw
ttonnd, where we landed and encamped for
the night. The next morning a vessel was
sjen in the olfiug.
Lieutenant Price aud Dr. Thomas mad? a
reconnoissancc and te.urned, n-porting her a
game worthy oar pursuit, and perhaps not too
f uiuidabl» lor our little force. As night ap
proached, we got under weigh aud advanced
towards her: but before we reached her she
bad weighed anchor aud put out to sea. Our
disappointment was great, but we returned,
determining that the next night she should
not escape us. Tbe next nigbt proved most
lavorable for an attack. It was dark and
stormy, causing the vessel t:> remain at her
anchorage. We started a little before mid
night, our boats moving in two columns—-
Nos. 1, 3, 5, and 7 in tbe port, and tbe alter
nate numbers, 2, 4, and 0, in the starboard
column. Lieutenant Pelot, commanding, led
tbe first boat; Lieutenant Price the second;
Midshipman Minor and Master s Mate Arthur
C. Freeman, commanded the third; Midship
man Trimble the fourth, with Master’s Mate
Thad Grey; Boatswain Seymour and Master’s
Mate Barclay the fifth; Dr. Thomas and Mis
ter's Mato Golden the sixth; Master’s Mate
ltobster and Dr. W. C. Jones the seventh.
Thus arranged, we rowed quietly aloDgwith
muffled oars. All nature was hushed, save
when the occasional thunder rolled in deep-
toned solemnity along the far-off horizon.
The lightning flashed luridly in the distance,
and was so soon gone as scarcely even for a
moment to lighten the intense darkness. But
again it flits across the cloudy sky, and now
the undefined form of some black mass rising
from the water’s surface is seen for an instant.
Oar boats press forward, and all await in
breathless silence the next flash. It comes,
and again brightens its rapid track, and this
time reveals unmistakably the lofty sides of
an enemy’s ship—tbe United States steamer
Water Witch, Commander Pendergrast.
Then Lieutenant Pelot, rising, made these
remarks, hurriedly aud earnestly “Now men,
Che hour has come ! Prepare yourselves for
a fiercer fight than that of the battlefield—the
eyes of your country are on you ! Mark well
what record you leave to history to-night !”
Within thirty yards of the enemy we were
hailed: 44 Boat ahoy! Who goes there?”
“Kunaway negroes,” exclaimed our faithful
negro piiot, Moses.
Nearer and yet nearer hurry on our barges,
when our gallant leader rose in his boat and
called out loudly, “ We are rebels ! Give way,
boys ! Three cheers and board her !”
A perfect yell answered him, followed by a
terrific shower of bullets from the steamer,
we being too close aboard for her to use her
heavy gnus. In an instant our boats were
alongside, and our men clambering up her
Bides.
The heavy boarding nettings were triced
up, but stayed our progress but a moment.
They were either cut through or scrambled
over, and we were on the deck, fighting hand
to baud—pikes thrusting, cutlasses flashing,
pistols and muskets giving forth their smoke
and flame, while the mad shouts of the strug
gling foemen. mingled with tbe shrieks and
groans of the wounded and dying, gave a
frightful climax to tbe din of battle.
Lieutenant Pelot was tbe first man whose I
families remain in Jonesboro, except those i
which some of tbe members are sick with
cholera. Two white men aud a negro woman
died thore of cholera daring Monday night
and Tuesday morning. Monday, La udon
Morns, living a mile from Jonesboro, died of
cholera. There were five new cases Tuesday.
Captain James telegraphed from Knoxville
to Dr. Sevier of Jonesboro on Monday, asking
him if they needed additional medical assist
ance at that place. Dr. S. replied, 44 Not at
present, but may to-morrow.” We learn,
however, that later in the day a dispatch was
sent to Mayor Buie, asking for medical assist
ance. There is said to be only one officer of
the city government the town marshall—left
in the place.
The same paper says “ a man named Mil
ler, died of the disease in Union county. He
was the father-in-law of a man named John
son, who had died in this city. After John
son’s death, Miller is reported to have taken
the bedding and hauled it in a wagon to his
home in Union county. He died a few days
afterward. A Dr. Lewis, who waited upon
him and two children, also died.
A white man named Anderson Day, died
yesterday morning, in a hovel below the
mouth of Second Creek, (Kuoxvilie.) He was
taken sick on Sunday, aud had all the symp
toms, though his doctor says it was not
choler* We understand that his own broth
er said that the deceased had not drawn a
sober breath for a week before he was taken
sick. Tbe corporation furnished a coffin.
The citizens of Johnson City arc much
alarmed at the proximity of tbe disease to
them, and it is reported here that they have
(refused to allow any one from Jonesboro to
get off the train at the depot.”
A Fight with a Horse.—A teamster named
Joe Allen, living on Woodbridge street, east,
purchased a horse in Genesee county a few
days ago, and, finding the animal ugly and
obstinate, he made preparations on Sunday
to break his spirit. Arming liimself with a
heavy whip and a club, Allen went into tbe
stable about ten o’clock on Sunday moiniug
and proceeded to business. The animal bit
at him as he tried to enter the stall, and Al
len stood back and “poeled” him with the
whip. The horse kicked and pawed for awhile,
anl then sagged back, snapped tbe halter,
and came out on the floor with a business
look in his eye wbieh was truly appalling.
Allen retreated back after seeing an open
mouth snapped together aboot an inch from
his nose, aud he just escaped two feet in
tended to remove the top of his head. By
shouting and whipping he frightened the
boisc back a few feet, and be then got under
the stairs, where for about half an hour, or
until Lis wife could gather a crowd, he was
bold prisoner, having all he could do to keep
the liorsc from dragging him out. Detroit Fre*•

Fishing for Brains. — Howard Paul says,
pleasantly, in Chaff:
“A distinguished physiologist recently an
nounced that fish diet was a great supplier of
phosphoric brainpower, and advised that all
persons whose pursuits made heavy draughts
on their intellectual resources such as lectur
ers before the Young Men’s Christian Associa
tion, newsboys, writeis of theatrical adver
tisements and patent medicines, aud electric
chain-band certificates, and more especially
the authors of the libretto of opera boufl’e—
should devour soles, live ou cod, aud general
ly go in for whiting aud stewed eels to recupe
rate their intellect. I grieve to say that the
experiment is a failure. The paper-wasters of
my acquaintance who ate fish voraciously in
tbe cause of science and belles leltres, give no
more indications of phosphoric fire in the
‘upper story,’ under the new regime, than
when they dined in their usual way at theii
usual restaurant, or put up with the cheerful
pot-luck that their various homes offered.”
The Centennial Buildings.—Fourty-four
different plans have been submitted to the
United States Centennial Commission for the
Centennial Buildings at Philadelphia, in 1876.
The awards are to be made next week. They
will be of one thousand dollars each to the
number of plans considered the best, not ex
ceeding ten, and from these ten or less will be
chosen the successful one.

ing blows thick and heavy around him, nrd
fighting with the coolness and superb cour
age of a classic hero. The command now
devolved upon Lieutenant Brice, who,
though seriously wounded, reassured our
men, and Lading them forward, fought gal
lantly until the enemy surrendered, after
fighting with desperation, and hotly con
testing with us the possession of the prize in
a struggle that was lor life. Bislols, alter be
ing fired, were used as clubs; pikes were
everywhere, and more than once we were well
nigh lost by overwhelming snperiority in
numbers.
Not one ol our officers escaped without hav
ing his clothes riddled. After the surrender
the prisoners were placed under guard, and
we got under weigh and steamed up the sound
and anchored under the guns of “Battery
Beaulieu,” which we reached about noon the
next day. As we approached we fired a broad
side and unfurled to the breeze the Southern
tToss, waving over the Stars and Stripes, and
were received by a salute from the batteries
and cheers from our troops encamped there.
Lieutenant Pelot 1 knew personally and well,
and in the dark days of that hapless struggle,
with all their record of heroism, of sublime
self-devotion, no more gallant spirit met death
for what now seems a dream; and ou the
bloodstained “roll of honor” of the South
there is nothing nobler than his life, nothing
braver than his death. A. C. F.

is understood that their mission is to visit
Harrisburg and several other cities where
colored conventions are to bo held, sud
make addresses in advocacy of the Kellogg
government as the rightful one of the State
of Louisiana. These men, it is said, are
among the shrewdest of their race, aud, be-

drilled in their parts, have been special
ly selected by Kellogg. It is assumed on all
hands that one of the first things for Congress
to do on its reassembling in December, is to
take up the case of Louisiana.
The Kellogg government, it is learned, is
now bosily engaged, in anticipation of this,
in taking just such testimony us was torn to
shreds by the Senate committee last winter.
It has assessed all its office-holders for the
