A London special says that the election at Green wich to All the vacant seat in the House of Commons resulted ia a conservative triumph. This ia the first instance sines 1862 of s conservative candidate being elected for that borough. Tbe rasatt,wMsb was not altogether unexpected, caused great depression in Liberal ranks in well in formed circles. It is accepted as virtually deciding tbe political campaign. It is almost certain the Con servatives will return to power after the approaching general election with a fair working majority. It is already stated on good authority that Gladstone will not seek re-election at the bands of his Greenwich constituents, and tbst he contemplate* retiring finally from Parliamentary life. The Qaeen’s Speech—Minister Motley Para lyzed. London, August C, 1873. The Queen'* speech proroguing Parliament thanked them for their provision for the Duke of Edinburgh. It states that the beat relations exist with all foreign powers—that the Zanzibar mission to suppress the slave trade has been successful—tbe commercial Telar tione between Franca and England have brought a sat isfactory inane, and the provisions of the Treaty of Washington are being carried out. John Lathrop Motley has lost the use of his left side by paralysis. Tbe election to fill the vacant seat in the House of Commons from Dundee, return James Yearn an, Lib eral. A similar election was cast in Staffordshire* to day. The result is not yet known. Emigration from Russia to ths United States is in creasing. Four hundred Russians sailed to-day in one steamer. Tbe movement threatens to depopulste some districts in Russia. GLIMPSES OF GOTHAM. Richmond Vi., August 6. 1873. Tbe Conservative State Convention met to-day at noon, at the theatre, tbe interior ot which, especially the stage, was decorated with flags of various nations, also State and national colors. The orchestra chain and parqoette wen filled with delegates, nearly four hundred in number. The remainder of the building was crowded with spectators. The stags was occu pied by a large number of prominent personages, representatives of the pnss from the city and other points in the State and out. The Convention was called to order by Hon. R. T. Daniels, chairman of tbe State Committee, on whose motion M. G. Harmon of Augusta couaty was chosen temporary chairman. A committee consisting of two from each Congressional district was appointed on cre dentials. During the absence of the committee, Hoa. Robert Ould was called upon and addressed the Convention in welcome, and in review of Hughes’ speech at Lynch burg. and repudiating that platform. Other speeches were made by Hon. A. M. Keeley, Mayor of Richmond, aud ex-Lieutenaut Governor Robert L. Montague, sod others. A recets was taken till four o’clock, st which hour the Committee on Credentials reported. Several hours wore consumed in discussing and amending the report. The question of appointing a Commit ee nent Organization gave rise to a debate as to tbe manner of formation of the committee, contending for each congressional delegation to have the privilege of selecting three of their own number to represent them in the committee and others for the whole committee, to be appointed by the chairman. The debate was conducted amid great coufosion, bat flusl’y iho la ter mode prevailed, and Ike chair ap pointed three from each district aa the delegation with Hon. RobL Ould as chairman. The Committee thus formed then retired- A very deddad spirit of antagonism was displayed In the va rious debates by the friends of Governor J. B. Kern per and Colonel Robert E. New Yobk, August C, 1*73. Charles Coburn alias Big Post has been arrested on tbe charge of killing an unknown man on laat Monday night. Coburn is a boatman, and confessed the crime to ths captain of the boat, but now denies It. Chicago, August 6,1873. , An accident occurred at Cushing ton on the Quincy road. A passenger train ran Into a cattle train. Tbe engineer and two cattle men killed—the passengers were unhurt. There were 323 deaths in tbe past week, incloding OC, cholera infantum; 11, cholera morbus; 26, diar rhoea. MASSACHUSETTS. Labor Reform Convention. Lowell, August 6, 1873. The Labor Reform State Convention, tbe object of which ia to secure the ten hour system, was attended by thirty delegates. In thr County Court yesterday, tbe Brown robbery case came up, but was continued until to morrow. This is a case of burglary in the night. The men were refused bond, and are now 1 uDguiahing in jr>i'. An adultery case of some interest was next dispo&ed of, tbe parties being fonnd *‘cot guilty.” A Miscegenation Case. A beastly double esse of mlscegonatiou will shortly come before the County Court. A white mau is charged with marrying a negro woman and a negro with marrying a white womau. The parties have been living together, as men and wives. They belong to the k>weat classes, as might be supposed. Mayor's 'Joart. The monotony of the Mayor’s Court wasbroktu yes terday morning by several cases of more than ordinary interest. Robert Williams, a gay and festive youth, charged dth being drunk and with resisting s police officer, as condemned to thirty days’ bard labor on a diet of bread and water. Robert Foster got ou a apree, became tlruuk, waa locked up, and for hi* UtUc frolic was ordored by Ills Honor to deposit five dollars and costa iu the city treasury. Lee Washington, in spite of his illuitiious cogno men, got tight and was also fined fiva dollars aud costa. The case of Gus Roberts was a more serious one. Gut was charged with larceny, and was remanded to prison to await a warrant. Two gay larks, who had engaged iu the diversion of brickbatting a bawdy bouse. His Honor, after hear ing the case patlentlv, fonnd them guilty, adminis tered s severe lecture to both, and wound up by fining twenty-five dollars, aud tbe ether ten dollars. This was in many respects a rich esse, and one that gave evidence of an opening f>r good missionary work. A Hew Motive Power. A young man of this city (Macon), has invented a uew motive power which he claim* ia more i>owerful than steam, and that it will answer more purposes than steam. He will have a wot king model on exhibi tion in a few days. A Five-Foot Snalu-. On yesterday a snake, five feet long, got into a home on New street and created quite a consternation among the women folks. It ran under the beds and other furniture, followed by the ladies, who dashed scalding water and soothing syrup bottles st It, but all to feet. Finally they called in a mau, who dispatched tbe reptile in thafire-placo. Where it came from, is a mystery. Colored Volunteers —.An Accident. Tbe‘•Forrest City Light Infantry,” a company ot colored volunteers from Savannah, arrived in tbe city last nigbt. and were received as tbe guests of 4 ■ Lincoln Guards.” Jeff Long made them s speech of welcome, after which they proceeded to make acquaintance with their celored brethren of this city. To-night the armory of the Lincoln Gcards was crowded to reple tion by the colored people, aud everything was pass ing off agreeably, when a tad accident occurred. 1 he ateps leading up to the armory broke down with the weight of the large crowd of persons upon it. One colored boy had bis arm broken, aud auotlier lhB leg, while several others were badly bruised aud scrap bed. Serious Cutting Affray. John Giles was badly cut in the groin about supper time last night, by a white man named John W. Haley, Whom be formerly hired. Giles was foftnerly a con ductor ou the Southwestern Railroad. IIU wounds are said tube very serious, aud it is feared that be will not turvive them. The police are ou the lookout for Haley. The ltain mn«l cite Central Koutl. It rained incessantly all d >y yesterday. Tbe engineer on tho Central Railroad reports that if the rain ou Tuesday night had continued a few hours longer half of tbe road would have been washed away. As it was, the rain cat up tbe road pretty badly, and made it rough riding for tbe traju*. The Ocuiulgce river is swollen but little, (he rsius being local only, and not sufficiently exteuded to materially affect it. Bold Robbery in a Store. At forenoon yesterday a big, burly negro entered the store of ex-Sheriff Doyle, near the City Magazine, and after looking around for awhile stated to Mr. Doyle that he was waiting for some one. He then leaned down ou tbe couutec and pretended to be wait ing, the proprietor of the store watching him all the time. Suddenly, by a dexterous movement, he open ed the money drawer, grasped several bills, aud start ed oat of the premises cn a run. Doyle was so taken aback by the boldness of the proceeding that be did not start in pursuit of the thief until bis capture was out of the question. Local Brevities. Yesterday was the dullest day of the summer. Forty-four marriage licenses were issued by tho Or dinary of Bibb county during July, of which thirty- two were for colored persons anxious to enter into the holy state of matrimony. Ten thousand postal cards have been sold st the postoffice in three days. • Mr. Flanders, of the Georgia Fiour Mills, left Macon i Tuesday night, for a trip to Tennessee. Motel Arrivals.
