On Wednesday last, two prisoners named Kessler, or, as they were formerly kDown in this county, Myers, were brought to this county, charged with having stolen two mules belonging to Capt J. W. Brown, of Beads- ville. The prisoners once lived in that neigh borhood. and were known to be bad men, ren dering themselves very obnoxious. One of them, son of the old man now UDder arrest, is said to have been bung by a mob some four or five years ago. _ , . . IgOn Wednesday evening Mayor W haley had information that there would be an effort made to lynch the prisoners, when he issued the following order: j To A. N. Kemp, Marshal of the City of Ful ton: You are hereby commanded to summon twenty good men to appear before me at my office, to be sworn in as an additional police force to aid and assist the sheriff in protect ing and defending the prisoners now in the county jail. Yon will select only sober and discreet men, and yon are hereby ordered to arm and equip them to the best possible ad-, vantage, and farther leave power to call to , your aid ever able-bodied citizen of the city [ Fnlton to see that no violence be done, and j that the law hereby may be maintained. Upon this, Marshal Kemp summoned a posse and made every disposition to guard the prisoners. They are no doubt bad men, and perhaps deserve death, but let them meet that punishment at tbe HAN hands of some other community, and let ours be known and everywhere recognized as a peaceable, law-abiding people.
