A correspondent of the St. Lonis Globe,
writing from Des Moines, Iowa, describes
Mrs. Kllen S. Tupper, tbe bee caltarist. This
lady was born at Providence, llbode Island,
in 1^>22. She won the danghter of Noah

well known treatise* on International law. In
1843 she married a Maino lumberman, and
in 18.T7 they moved to Iowa. Reverses
came, and Mrs. Tupper turned her attention
to bees.
She purcbased two colonies, and began to
work with them, meanwhile reading every
thing which the could find relating to bee
culture: bat she soon learned that theory and
practice were quite opposite matters. Her
two '•olonie* increased quite rapidly. SLe
bought improved hives as lu.,t as sLe could 1
afford them. She soon after became inter- j
ested in Italian bees, and procured a few.
She then began to write about bees, giving 1
the result of her practical knowledge. Her ,
reputation soon began to Ire csrublwu^l, she I
was sought out by varioort journals, end she!
