price at first demanded was $100 for the
child and $25 for the cow, but a compromise
was finally effected on $100 for the two.
Bridal parties had better not go to Sarato

Mr. James Bussell Lowell, when he got his
degree of D. C. L., at Oxford, was particu
larly well cheered by the undergraduates in

A man about fifty years of age, accompa
nied by a wife who looked still older, applied
at the ticket office of the Central road yester
day ior tickets to Jackson. When told the
pnee he demurred, and asked for second-

be had, and after withdrawing for a conver
sation, he returned to the window* and asked
“Well, won’t you knock ofl' a dollar if the
old woman will ride on the platform ?”
Jane Buckley, of London, is evidently the
sort of woman that Sterne had in mind when
he described the notary’s wife as “a little
fume of a woman.” According to the Times,
Jane was arraigned at the Thomas police
court, on the charge of “setting fire to her
husband,” and, bail not being forthcoming,
she was sent below to await trial.”
British army officers are extremely discon

regard to the abolition of the purchase sys

On the night of August 1, Mrs. Cassius
Claxtou, of Shelby county, Ky., heard a man

A daughter of B. W. Porter, residing near
Monmouth, 111., while making her bed the
other day discovered a rattlesnake comforta

The chronicler of “doings” at the White
Sulphur springs has broken out again. This

Emma Black, living in a small town on the
Mississippi, saved a man’s life the other day
in a curious way. He was fishing and tum
bled out of his boat, and, being nnable to
swim, would have perished had not the
maiden, discovering his danger, swam out to
him and throwing into his hands her back
hair, four feet in leegtb, towed him to land.
The famous 1,623 folio edition of Bbaks-
peare’s plays is being produced in fac-simile
in London, under the personal supervision of
Mr. Howard Stanton, the English chess
champion of former days.
Books in China are not dear, and the stan
dard hivtones and school books are very
cheap. The whole of the Coofucian classics
sell at from thirty cents to $1 GO, according
to the quality of the paper. The Chinese
never lay duties on books. Sensible people.
We have had a man to work for the last
fifteen days with slate and pencil, and he es
timates that if 15,000 American poets were
to be stricken with appoplexy to-morrow, the
newspapers wouldn’t have more than one
day’s rest from red-eyed women and long
haired young men who want to see ‘•them
