On Two Sides of a Hail- ENOCH MORGAN’S SONS ton<le U se<. Railroad Time Table,
Once, on a pilgrimage to St. Maiy » Loch i
and the Grey ’Mare’s Tail, I put op for the j
night at the well-known “Jenny O’BirkhillV |
on the top of the watershed between the j
streams which fall into the Germ in Ocean
and those that reach the Irish Sea. Some j
•Wast-Country folk’ were stayiog in the i
house at the same time, and in the morning I
I was awakened by the shrill voice of a girl j
shouting behind uoy door, “Mither ! inilher ! j
the wain’s walking ! * My instinctive impulse
was to understand wain as waggon, and the j
sentence as, “Mother ’.—the waggon's walking
or moving off! ’when the voice of a child io an
adjoining room reminded me of wean—a word
not in ordinary use in onr dialect, but famil
iar enough in the writings of Burns, where,
however, I did not read wain but ween, or
weean. The sentence nit become, “Moth
er!—baby’s walking!" Quite accidentally I
afterwards found out that what I bad heard J
as walkin’ was wauken —awake— and that the
information conveyed was neither “the wagon
is walking” nor “baby is taking its first tod- j
die;’’but “Mother!—baby is awake!” or, as
it would have been in Teviotdale, “Mather !
the bairn’s weaken !” .1 smiled to thiDk how
I had been as completely tripped up by a sim
ple sentence in a Scottish dialect, separated
trom my own cnlv by a ridge of bills, as if it
had been French or German. I have since
found that a mistake, the converse of mine,
was made, under less extenuating circum
stances, by Pinkerton, in bis “Scottish Bal
lads” of 1873. Among the poems given in
that collection is “Christis Kirk of the
Grene,” in which are the lines:
"Bom 6tr»1c with ('tinea, sum gather! t atalui*.
Sum flrd and ill iniochevit;
The tneattnl wan within tan wain is,
I hat day lull well he previt.
For ho cam hame with unbirat brain*.
Qaliair fechtarics wer mischievit.”
Wain h gloseed by Pinkerton as “a child,”
so that the minstrel tonnd his safety from the
s l Aini8 an.! atraiks, not in cronebiug between
two wagons, bat between two children. A
South Coautiy friend, whose parents were
natives of Central Scotland, where ea is still
pronounced as ai, as in Shakespeare's English,
and the words pear, bear, tear, wear, relates
how he used, when a boy, to be puzzled w’ith
the expression, “We played—we played with
thee,” regularly used by bis father in con- !
ducting family devotions. Why there should
be so much said about playing in the family !
prayers, was a mysteiv which was only 1
cleared up oj revisiting the paternal home in
latter years, when the expression was found
to be, “We plead with Thee.”— Tie Dialect of \
the Southern Counties of Scotland, by James A. i
11. Murray.
All’s Well That Ends Well.
Saturday evening, says the Saciarnento
Union, a gentleman in the employ of the Cec
il nl Pacific Iviilroad Company drove out to a
place about fifteen miles lrom the city, where
bis family i re stopping, and soon afterward
started out on his return to town. Before
starting, lie lighted his meerschaum and in-
dulgtdin a long aud pleasant smoke as he
drove along. This over, he placed the pipe
in the outer brei&t pocket of his coat, and
paid no more attention to it. By and by, a
peculiar smell greeted bis olfactories—a
smell of burning woolen cloth—and, as it in
creased, he began to lo»k abont to see if bis
garments w»re on fire, and at the first
movement be fonud that the whole pocket I
had bnrned out of his coat, and the fire was
spreading lapidly. He grabbed at the burn
ing material hastily, but was so nervous
about it that he frightened the horse, and the
animal ran. To make the matter
worce, the lines were not buckled together,
and one slipped out of bis grasp while he
was endeavoring to smother the fire with his
other hand. Still worse, the increased speed
increased the breeze, which fanned the fire,
and portions of it dropped down upon his
pants, burning through them, and causing
him to bounce up and down on the seat as
though he were trying to settle an unusually
hearty meal! There he was—horse running
away, line dragging and fire rapidly making
the cuticle of his leg rival the hue of his red
flannel nndotclotbiug! At hist, bv dint of
dexterous clawing, be managed to smother
the fire, then stepped out on the shatts aud
recovered the line, aud in the course of time

which is 2,000 tons. . Hematite iron gets
firmer again as the time for tbe reduction ot
the German duty draws near. The foundries
ia the West Yorkshire district arc well em
ployed, and great diffic ulty is experienced in
getting engineering work of ail description
competed. The forges, mills, c*:c , art* still

This betokens immediate resuscitation of the
trade when consumers shall have fuliy real

ed. The prices of plate, bars, etc, remain
nominally at the figures given las: week, but
in several cases we have heard of fiorn 10* to

cently. Several large orders tor rails, bars,
etc., are about to be given out for South
America and India. It is Loped and believ
ed that a certain portion, and cot a small
one, will be secured by tbe ironmasters of
this district. On the whole, things look bet
ter for the iron trade r.ow than they have ' ^ARIETTA STREET

leeltug is that there will be a good autumn
