I \ i 1 Foreign Gleanings. We learn from Lucerne that M. Thiers has taken rooms at the Kaltbad, on the Right, and intends to remain there some time. The Saltan has addressed an autograph let ter to the King of Greece, thanking him for the gift of the Order ot the Redeemer. Bicycle races are becoming very popular in England. It is questionable whether they are not hurtful to the human frame. The Voce della Verita sajs the Italian pre fects are every where i.-sning orders prohibit- ; ing pilgrimages. A dispatch irom Frankfort states that a fraud has been discovered to have been per petrated upon Messrs. Rotb-child to the amount of 150,000fl. It is intended to ert ct on a suitable place in the centre of London statutes to the memory of Wjcliffe and Tyndale, in connection with their efforts to secure “a free and open Bible” lor the people. The Italian Government has authorized the i Directors of the Lombardo Venetian Railway to issue 56,000 obligations, 5 perctnt., of a nominal \alue of 500 livres. A letter from Geneva states that Eudes, the ex-General of the Commune, is very ill with consumption, and that no hopes are enter tained of his recovery. Professor G. Scbweizer, director of the Moscow Observatory, died on July 5, after a long illness. The membeis of the Beilin branch of ihe New York Academy of Natural Science have left Paris for London. General Sabine has offered to erntribute £100 towards another German Expedition, and to increase the contribution to £200 if the expedition is placed under the charge of Captain Koldewy. Many assassinations, the result of feuds be tween Carlists and Republican 0 , are reported in the piovince of Gerona. In tie neighbor hood of Angles eight persons have been shot in one week. The steamer carrying Sir Samuel Baker and his party broke down at Shad wan, in the Red Sea, 300 miles from Suez, and a tug steamer has been dispatched for the purpose of render- i jg assistance. The Council-General of Ajaccio has met three times to elect its President, but on each occasion so many members abstained from voting, that the election of Prince Na poleon, who had a mnjmity, was invalid. The Court of Cassation h«s rejected the -appeal of MM. Gauldrce-Boileau and others against the sentence passed upon them in connection with the Transcontinental, Mem phis and Pacific Company. A curious fact in natural history, import ant to t* a-planters, lias been discovered — namely, that lccnsts will not eat tea-leaves. A Darjeeling paper tells us that very large flights of loons's recently settled on the tea- gardens, reddening the surface of the ground by their numbers; but in a few hours they passed on, Laving devoured every blade of grass, but leaving the tea-bushes absolutely intact. Xanthona a australis, one of tbe grass gum trees of Australia, is coming into flower lor the first time in Europe, in the succulent house at Kew. There is also a fine plant ot agave jacqniniana, removed to the palm-house for the sake of space, which is now in full flower. The German African Exploration Society has received a dispatch, dated July 1, an nouncing the arrival of Professors Bastian and Goschen at Cabinna Clongd, for which place Dr. Gnesfeld had started on June 28th, from Sierra Econe. Dr. Falkenstein, Dr. An atom, physician, and Herr Linder, engineer, are hourly awaiting, at Berlin, further intelli gence, on receipt of which they leave to join the expedition. The Seaport Appeal remarks this about the Brunswick and Albany Railroad: Ihe lumber trade of the Brunswick and Albany Railroad is beginning to increase into mammoth proportions. Twenty steam saw mills are in active operation along tbe line, and they are unable fo supply the demand. In fact, the railroad cannot furnish accommo dations for the lumber freight which is now Ivirg at the mills awaiting tranepoitation. We clip the above paragraph from the Albany Central City. The last sentence re veals at startling fact. For some two weeks but two engines have been on the road, one of which was constantly used on the passenger train, leaving but one engine to haul the pro duct of twenty mills. Two engines have been in the shops of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad for several months. Is this good management ? asks a friend at our elbow. A few days ago we enquired and ascertained that there were orders for about one hundred and fifty cars on file, at the office cf the Brunswick A Albany Railroad, and but one engine to draw them with. Why should thi9 state of affairs exist, is the earnest enquiry of a suffering people. Since the above paragraphs were written, we notice quite an accession to the motive power of the Brunswick & Albany Railroad, in tbe arrival this week of the engine Henry I Cities, in thorongh repair and newly painted. This will no doubt give an impetus to the lamber basinets over this line to our port. This work was done at the shops of the At lantic and Golf Railroad, at Savannah, in the reasonable time of one hundred and forty days, which leads us to expect that the engine WiRachoochee will soon be on tbe Road, as it was put in the same shops but a few days after the Clei r s was sent. The Road will soon seriously need her services, and we shall take pleasure in noting her arrival. The machine ry, rolling stock and road-bed should be put iu the best possible condition, in that it may be turned ov<r tbe new purchaser on the 15th of October in a creditable condition. Ac- ; cording to this the lucky winner of the Sl f - 740, the amount in the Augusta Cotton Pool, is Mr. Ileriy Benson, of this city, his estimate being 3,931,277, or 769 bales over the actual ! crop. Mr. J. J. Doogbly, also of this city, is tb*» next ne:»r*st his estimate being about 3,- ‘ 000 under the Financial Chronicle’s state ment. The majority of the reinaiuder ot the ‘ 358 estimates are understood to be far below the real crop. Mr. Benson, the winner of the pool, is a young man well known aud highly esteemed for his moral character and business capaci ties. He has been with Messrs. Russell A .
