The Eel-Skin Club- A DETECTIVE S stoby op the great orange RIOT IN NEW YORK. “Not eyen a glass of sherry ?” “Not even a glass of sherry,” replied Mr. Leeds, as he pushed back the decanter I offered him, with a look in his eyes, however, which said as plainly as words, “I envy yon the pleasure; but excuse me.” “There’s something up, then, I suppose.” “You’re ‘ * * ^ ‘ something up.” | devil will be paralyzed all his life too.” “May I ask, John Leeds, what all this | “What are you talking about ?” I asked. m£ans ?” I still pursued. i “About the gentleman who was found — It means this—I’m euchred . and he i ^j g area on j^adison avenue half-murdered. about, and he expired before dawn of the fol- lie invented the 6and-bag club, or eel-skin — ’ club, made by pouring fine sand into an eel- skin, and the formidable weapon does the lowing day. The autopsy disclosed that he too, had died from concussion of the brain, yet there was no ska'll fracture. This was getting to be drcadtul, and here were we de tectives sucking our thumbs and hunting up little thieves and counterfeiters while some mysterious agent was spreading death all about us. I could not sleep of nights,” and John Leeds sighed heavily. “Now for the roan in the area,” as you called him, Harry : “for that man has given —— - - . . - - .. , i me the first clew on which I can work, and You’re right,” be s^id, very dryly; “there s , enough it is; and like enough the poor PP;” _ „ , , . I devil will be paralyzed all his lif What are you talking about ? About the gentleman who was found in brought his fist down the table and made the glasses rattle again. We were sitting in a small private room at tached to the B Hotel, where Leeds and I often retired to transact a little confidential, social business, after office hours. John Leeds was called the most skillful detective in the service of the city government, and I was a clerk—under a good salary, you may be sure—in the office of the Receiver of Taxes. This was the first time I had ever known John Leeds to go back on me in that little room, and many’s the high old time we’ve had there, too; but when he seemed so seri ous, and refused his sherry, and brought down his fist with a bang, 6aying “ I’m euchred!’’ I knew something had pulled the wrong way with him, and I was determined to find out what. Every man has his tender spot, and John Leeds’ tender spot w as his strong friend ship lor your humble servant, else why—I said to myself—would he have worked so faithfully to get the aforesaid into his present “posish” in the Receiver ot Taxes’ office ? “Now, John, what is it?” I said, iaying my hand on his arm, “Is it money ?” He shook his head. “Is it a woman ?” The facts are these, but they have not been reported fully in the newspapers for many reasons. Late at night, Joel Benson heard a noise in the lower part of his house, and, without thinking much danger— for he was a strong and courageous man—he descended. He soon discovered that robbers were at his silver safe in the basement dining-room, and in his thoughtless indignation he pitched into them. There were two of the rascals, and he soon laid one of them out on his back by a well directed blow in the face, and grappled quickly with the other. He had his match, too, for the man was a sturdy, thick set fellow, and they had a nice wrestle across that dining room and out toward the base ment door. Benson said afterward he never thought of shouting for help, or the scoun drel might have been captured; his only Idea was to punish him—so they writhed and groaned together in a terrible struggle. One moment Benson nearly beat the villain to the ground, and tho next he was himself pin* ioned to the wall; they were matched so equally that if cither had freed one arm from his foe for an instant, it would have been victory for the other. ‘At this juncture they reached the area and It’s a secret,” he said, finally, “and I’ve were writhing in deadly embrace when j tions. sworn io myself not to taste a morsel of fine- u eDBon heard the robber call to his compan cut [fine-cut chewing tobacco, and John Leeds ,who was staggering toward them was an inveterate chewer] or swallow a thim bleful of V. O. P., until I've found it out?” “Good,” I replied, simply by way of en couraging him to go on, and he did go on murderous work, scarcely leaving a bruise or mark to tell the tale. Bones may be broken, brains beaten to a jelly, but the skin remains whole and the skull unfractured. Since Miller’s imprisonment he has con fessed the murder of the woman found in | Harlem river, that ot the German merchant | at Hoboken, the stranger, in Spring street, j and many other crimes equally heiuous. His l dreadful invention has been freely used by ! the professors of the dark lantern, and I think the reason they hung Russell the other ; day in San Francisco was, not that he was gnilty of the murder of Grotty, but that an j eel-skin club wa9 fund in his possession. However, Jack Leeds still lives in New j York, and they call him a Sampson in his | profession. The Weed Sewing Machine at Vienna.
