The Sultan of Turkey has sent to Prince Bismarck the collar of Osmaulie and the star i f that order 6et in brilliants. Secretary of War SYm. W. Belknap has left Washington for Keokuk, Iowa, whither he w.us called by the sickness of his sou. The saying, “It's too thin,” is not new. The suit ot Elizibeth Parker against the Boston and Albany Railroad Company, for personal damages, has resulted in a verdict in lavorof tbe plaintiff for $19,500. There is just now quite a gathering of lit erary lions and lionesses at the residence of Mr. Howells, in Jefferson, Ohio. Among those present are Henry W. Longfellow and Lis tl rje little daughters; Howells, Jr., of the Atlantic Monthly; Lowell, tbe poet and essay- ist; Warner, tbe genial philosopher; Annie Howels, literaiy editor of the Inter-Ocean; and Mrs. Mary Fields, the racy correspondent and contributor. There is need in London for the missiona ries of moral Paganism. Civilization is a failure and Christianity is played out, if the London Church Times may be believed, when it says that “It is no secret that the bishop of London has hawked the living (All Saints’ Margaret street) abont to every known moderate High churchman whom he thought capable of stooping to carry out the notori ous and discredited Purchas judgment, and that he failed, because he had not allowed for the operation of such influences as con- sience and gentlemanhood; ’ and that the bishop of Canterbury sympathizes with the brothel keepers. Did he feel snch an insane desire to confer a favor npon them that he must now say, with premeditated hesitation, ‘ 'I regret the necessity of inconveniencing yon, madame, but I niust'ask to share your seat.” Does be regret the necessity that now gives him an apparently legitimate chance to ask this woman who she is, where she is. going, and why she don't take somebody with her ? Cab he' calmly raise his hand toward the hlne vault above him, and truthfully say that he has not anxiously longed fer snch a contingency? Hasn't he revolved a thousand plans for making his attack npon her reserve, and isn't be abont to pnt the most diabolical one into execution? Hasn't he imagined the effect of some original remark already familiar to him through frequent rep etition, bnt of necessity new and striking to her ? Ain't there a suspicions air of patron age abont him as he settles down to his task; and doesn’t there seem to be lurking some where the suspicion that he deems himself vastly superior to her ?
