Seqnoyah, a Cherokee half-bread, who is
entitled to the honor of inventing an
alphabet, and reducing a language to
symmetrical form. This man was igno
rant of the English, or the alphabet of
aDy other European language, but he was
a thinker, a man of rare ingenuity, and all
expert in many handicrafts scarcely known
among bis countrymen. He was the Tubal
Cain ot his race, a famous workman in met
als, and an inventor of many things. Ob
serving the whites recording their language
by means of writing, Sequoyah conceived the
idea of reducing the Cherokee to the consist

rales of his own construction, he began to
teach children; ami when they had become
able to read his writings with facility he went
to the chiefs with his invention. But, like all
investors and reformers, be was looked upon
as a dreamer, and little attention paid to him.
But he was not discouraged at the reception
given his work. He went among the people,
and when he wrote sentences and his pupils
read them, the people began to look with
more favor upon him. A final test was made
of the value of this discovery in the following
manner: Sequoyah and some of the minor
chiefs were placed apart from some of the
pupils, and the chiefs dictated while Sequoyah
wrote. The writing was then carried to the
pupils and by them read. This test turned the
scales. Old and young began to learn the
eighty-five characters invented by Sequoyah,
and the inventor became the school-master of
his tribe.
In the years 1826-27 missionaries came
among the Cherokees, and, recognizing the
value of Sequoyah’s invention, they adopted
it and started a newspaper, printed from a font
of type in t*je Cherokee characters. This
journal, called the Cherokee Phoenix, was de
voted to the interests of the cause represent
ed by the missionaries; and this use of bis in
vention dashei the cup of Sequoyah’s happi
ness, for he was a sturdy adherent of the an
cient pagan ideas ot his tribe. The bitterness
of soul ubich he experienced when he saw
parts ot the New Testament and other books in
culcating the doctrines of Christianity dissem-
i aated among his people by means cf his in
vention, knew no consolation. The tribe
still resided iu Alabama aud Georgia when
these events occurred. In the progress of _J
time the demands of the white population ex-1 BEST
pelled the Cherokees and Creeks trom their |
ancestral hunting grounds, and Sequoyah,
then an old man, shared the fate of his[H
people, and journeyed with them to their new
