AND HOW SHE LEFT HIM BY MIBKI&HT— A BO- j yANTIC STOBX OF LOVE, COUETSHLP ASV j MABRIAOE—WISTEH AND SPBIXO rXr- TED, TO BE TOES ASUNDER AFTER SIX YEARS —ISAAC HAUSER AND BECKIE, HIS WIFE, MYS TERIOUSLY SEPARATED — O, WHERE'S RE BECCA GONE? From tha He,ding Eigle, Sept. fo.J There are very few people in this city or neighboring townships who do not remember ibe familiar countenance of “Deckie, the mateb- . iri,” who captured and married Isaac Ganser, ,Alsace township farmer, who counts his pot;- st.isions by the hundred thousands of dollars. Some six years ago the poor orphan match- gii! was in the habit of making journeys out i’erklomen avenue, past Dengler’s tavern, and down to the Black Bear, where she would generally dispose of all her stock in trade. The sun of a beautiful, happy morn ing in Jane had been soariug in the heaven tally three hours, r.ud the sturdy farmer who had been to the city to dispose of his stock of dairy produce, was returning to his home. In the vicinity of the toll-gate he overtook the poor match-girl and there it was he first met her face to face. Beckie asked the farmer to allow her to ride up the hill, and, strapge to s.,y, the request was granted. And that jour- lay up the hill settled th# fate of the farmer widower. The pretty blue eyes of his com panion played sal havoc with the heart of the wealthy land-owner, and when he leit her an audible sigh went out .from his soul as he turned his horses away. The very next day the farmer was a suitor i r the hand of Beckie, the match-girl, then twenty-two years oi age, though small and yonthtnl in appearance. She was recommended as a smart and respectable girl by the neigh bors. and after six nights in courting, the innocent and confiding spirit of the sympa thetic match-girl gave way, and she consented to marry the white-haired farmer of three score and ten, but worth nearly a quarter of a million in hard, round dollars. The Bev. Mr. Leinbach married Ihe loving conple, and (or two years a more bappy and contented pair of idolizing sonls than old Isaac Genser .'.ad his bride conld not be found in all the country. She had every thing sho de sired ’ He educated her, bought her horses and carriages, a magnificent piano, silk and satins, money, pleasure, private pews, and all else her heart desired. A child was born nnto them which proved to bo a little girl, acd they named it Katie. The neighbors came, and the young girls of the , a an try round made it a special point to con gregate at the Ganser farm home on Saturday cud Sunday nights, where they would be sure to meet their accepted lovers. Music and t inging wonld reign supreme, and cider and apples would constitute the feast. The far mer’s young bride was the pride of the neigh borhood, and right handsomely did she attend to her duties as housewife and lady. The years crept by, and gradually it became apparent that she had either been spoiled by her doting husband, or that she had become weary of her choice. Things at the Ganser farm-house were crosswise, and Beckie and Isaac were out. The piano remained locked, and there was a gloom about the parlor that was strikingly foreboding. A year ago they partially ceased rooming together, and she positively declined to occupy the same cham ber with him at all times, upon the ground that he was filthy and dirty, and then there arose a dark cloud in the home of the land- owner of Alsace. With the old man’s rigidi ty, Beckie became more and more frigid and distant. Silence before a storm was aptly exemplified. For some months they did not speak, and then of a sudden there arose a perfect hurricane of harsh words and ex pletives. Beokie asked for a divorce, but the stern farmer forbade it. Then she threatened to poison him, bat never carried it out At varions times she stated she would run away and never more be heard from. This was not heeded, and np to Sunday evening nothing definite had transpired. Yesterday morning, however, it was discovered that Beckie had departed, and, singular enough, had taken away all she owned In the way of clothing and valuables in a wheel borrow. Since then nothing has been heard of the ran-away. Mr. Ganser was in the city yesterday and made the information to several parties. He is in his seventy-sixth year, and is apparently hale and hearty. He stands about five feet six inches, is somewhat bent wiih age, and has white flowing hair and closely trimmed whiskers. He told the facts of his married life with considerable feeling, and it was evi dent that while not grieving much over the loss of his young wife, ho was ill at ease and anxious to know what had become of her. He stated that when he first married her, things went aloog smoothly. She had everything she wanted and everything her own way. Her eve ry thought was anticipated, and her wants pro vided for. All the money she received from seals of farm and dairy produce she kept, beside other amounts that k had been lying around loose were kindly appropiiated. She was obliged to do no work, retired when she de sired to, and arose when the sun wa3 high in the heavens. Beckie mast be a remarkable sleeper, for Mr. Ganser remarks that she could be picked np oat oi bed and carried down stairs and not be awakened. All that she was required to do was to superintend the household duties, which she did in a very excellent manner. During Sunday she was .11 at ease, and toward evening made known her intention to pay a neighbor a visit She was persuaded, however, to remain at home, and at the customary hour they retired, he to his room and she to hers. Monday morn ing came, but the little wife, like the Arabs, had folded her tent and silently glided away. All her effects had been stored in a wheel barrow, but whither they were wheeled or to where she had gone to remains an unsolved mystery as yet. One of the reasons given for the departure by the old farmer is that the hired man’s wife was exceedingly jealous. It was charged that the young wife thought more ot the teamster than she did of her own husband. The su perintendent of the farm, alluded to, is a young man of great vitality, and is of fair ap pearance. His better half has been noticing lor the past six months numerous short-com ing'-. In the absence of the former, the hired man would have lots of business in the farm house, but of what import it was there was no one on the outside conld tell. And the young man’s wife became jealous, and for a time there was a little war in progress on the Ganser form. When the old man heard of this, he consoled them by saying that he guessed there was nothing in it. The hired man still re mains on the farm, or the sudden departure of the young wife would be still more romantic. This will be news for a great many people, as it is a matter of greaVSurprise to all, that Bvckio should so suddenly rush fiom a home of affluence down ta whenever her singular in fatuation should lead her— It is whispered that during the past few months something has been observed about her that was not altogether right.
