When a Baltimorean is tol<l that wild hor-os ..a he fonntl within ten miles ot the eastern coast of Maryland, he is likely to be incredu lous. A visit to Chincoteague will cure his skepticism. Wild ponies are abundant here, iiid n hundred of them may be seen in a hall hour’s walk from the Atlantic Hotel. Nobody knows bow they got hero. The oldest in habitant remembers of hearii " his graml- ather say that they were on the island when he was a boy. Probably they were ca reering over’ the sand hills when tho first white settler crossed the sound. Thcro id a tradition lint some '»rcat Virginia gentleman, of 200 years ago. was bringing over a pair of ponies from Eng land, anJ tliat the ship which carried them v. as wrecked off Assateagne Beach; tho ponies were washed ashore, and were the progenitors the little animals that now ft*r« upon Hi.* i.:!t marsh*, s ot Chincoteagnt. In the last - exriury they were considered of no value, and iris rot known that the proprietors of the island ever set up any claim to those which grazed upon their land.?. When the herds men became the owners of the soil, they be gan to lasso some ot them, and to put a mark Me on them by w hich they could be recognized j afterward. A few were domesticated and u>ed lor riding. Tlii marking process went .*c from year to year, nntil forty years ago there was no pony on the islsnd that was not claimed by somebedy. Many ol them were tamed and taken over to the main land. There are about five hundred ponies on the island, including those on Assateague. They gallop to the pasuire 'rounds, rnd alter much yelling, fast riding, . ad eomo little swearing, they manage to ririve one of iho herds down to the shore. Nearly all the houses on Chincoteague are built along the sound, and the yards in front .join each other, thus forming a continuous le me. When the herds get started down the shore tue riders press close after, yelling and whoop ing, find there is a lively chase until the avenue that leads to the pen is reached. Here , crowd cf men are stauding, and they turn the head of the flying column into the square. 'Some of the pomes suspect treachery, and run into the water, but the riders dash alter them, and soon the whole herd is forced into ihe pen. The colts stick close to their • ;nms, and in all the rearing and plunging about through the pen they never become . eparat d. A stout man, with a long pole in his hat I, and a looped rope at tho end of it, post- himself at the mouth of the pen, and ,s the panics run past he drops the loop over tho hea l of one of the coifs. The little fellow plunges about and shakes his head most furi ously, but all to no purpose; the men haul him out and throw him down on his right side. All this timo the branding iron has been heating at a lire near by, presided over by sundry urchins who take delight in this part of the performance. The face of the iron sometimes bears the initial letters of the owner’s name, and sometimes it is a simple monogram, such ns a circle or square, to which the owner lays claim. When the colt has been thrown, a boy brings an iron trom the fire aud it is stamped on the pony s Lip. There is no cruelty in ihe operation, because the iron only burns through the hair an d scarcely scars the skin, i saw a two-year-old colt branded while standing on hri feet, and it did not seeui to feel the burning.
