SCrttB INCIDENTS OF THE TBOUBLOVS TIMES IN
5EW YORK — HOW MR. m'cULLOUGH
HEARD THE NEWS—THE EE-
CEPTION TO CHAET.ES
“ - DEAD LAUGH.
« 'orrespondencc of the Louisville Courier-Journal.
New York, Sept. 20, 1873.
The lute Wall street panic has absorbed tbe
ttention of everybody dining tbe past ten
days, aad very naturally so. Though the
papers have published columns of re
port*?, interview.*, 4 ‘ cards,” and state
ments, yet they liavo far from ex
hausted the subject, br.t as is always
the case, they have passed over some
of the most striking features of the past
week unnoticed. It seems strange that so
many pictare.wpio episodes of almost every
^reat event nro thus neglected bv our great
'laities, yet such is almost invariably tho case.
The cause I fancy is that reporting, which
JTeory J. Raymond rightly held to be the
highest kind of newspaper work, is left to the
youngest, poorest paid and least capable men
on the press. Hence, instead of a brilliant
or graphic picture of the scene on the street
during tho panic, which each of the great
Uilies might have given, we had only* bold
statements o ( fact, often marked by great
ignorance and lack of literary skill.
What a picture might have been made of the
interview between Grant and Vanderbilt at
tho Fifth Avenue Hotel on Sunday; or of I within tha leg%l hoars of sale, fifteen aid three-fourth J

HOW MS. M’CTLLOUGH HEARD THE NEWS.
First, as is generally known, ex-Secretary
ilngb McCullough, who is at tho head of the
f»ndon house of Jay Cooke, McCullough &
Co., was on his way from England with some
of his family, and arrived hero on Monday
morning last. It was thought that his return
to the United States was caused by tho weak
state of the American branch of the firm, but
such was not the case. His visit was purely
• »ne to gain rest and enjoyment. The voyage J — -
created by the expectation of rneeti Three Cottages for Sale

rushed up to Mr. McCullough and I’jti \
Cooke, a brother of Jay Cooke, and. though j
he was an entire stranger to either of them,
blurted out. “There has been a great financial j
panic, and your firm has all gene to smash.” j
i t was a cruel and heartless w ay to break such go days,
bad news, and both the men to whom it was !
told were terribly shocked. Mr. McCullough,
who is careless of wealth, but regards his rep
utation more highly than C’asaio, turned
deadly pale, so that those about thought he
would have fainted; but neither spoke a word
but hastily left the steamer as soon as possi
ble, so as to reach Wall street and consult
with their partners.
Another episode, w hich I will next relate,
is a striking illustration of tho devotion and
self-sacrifice which ia often show n by persons
in a dependent position. A gentleman whose

THE DEFAULTHC OAKEETON.
This is oao of the redeeming features of
these troublous times. Ou the other hand,
the worst thing about it nil is, that almost the
beginning of the whole crisis may be traced to
that too common practice of defalcation by
young Carleton, of the Union Trust Company,
f happen to know something about his person
al history, and it is exceedingly sad, because
now so hackneyed. Two years ago he began '• o
be very prosperous. He had a salary of $10,000,
which ought to Lave satisfied him, but his am
bition was great. He soon set up Lis own car
riage—a modest one—then a larger and more
showy one. Presently ho had his house in I o ]| ]]
town and another in the country, and so it j
went on, no one accusing aud yet many sns- ' for the rem
pecticg that the money to pay for all this dis
play was not rightly earned. Bnt the gods
having made Liar mad now began las destruc
tion, which followed with terrible swiftness.
A month ago, Carleton’s lovely wife, just
twenty-four years of age, took cold and died
suddenly, leaving two voting children with
no one to care for them. She had a magnifi
cent funeral. It is said that the flowers alone
cost $3,000, but the husband was heart-brok
en, and the poor babes wailing all day and
night made the neighbors heart-sick. Then
came his disgrace and flight, ana now the
only thought is—happy that mother whom
death had snatched away so opportunely.
