Scraps of Personal ana Foliti- trade, «nd b&vo opened jv corner of Grubb and Broad cal History- TLfc Cinciunati Commercial «ivcs some in teresting fragments of political bistory in sup port of tbe proposition that “two of tbe prom inent citizens ot Ohio who narrowly escaped Fie presidency were Thomas Ewing and Wil liam Allen.” Therein it appears that when L appears that wben the Whig Convention of lx IS bad defeated Henry Clay and nominated General Taylor for l’reeident, it was thought desirable to nominate a friend of the former for Vice- Pre&ident, and Thomas Ewing was selected for that purpose. But Lewis D. Campbell, tho head of the Ohio delegation, was indig nant at the detent of Clay, and refused to bo comforted by the nomination of Ewing for Vice-President. Hence Millard Fillmore was given that place upon the ticket; was elected Vice-President, and became President upon the death of Taylor. The chance of Mr. Allen was lost m tho Democratic Con vention of that year. While the bitter fight between Cass and Van Boren wnsat its height Allen, bo the Commercial's story runs, was agreed npon as a compromise candidate, and was offered the nomination. But he was loy al to Cass, and refused. These are interest ing facts, but after all they scarcely prove that tho escape of both these gentlemen was a very narrow one. Ewing’s chance was this: That if he had been nominated for Vico Pres ident instead of Fillmore, he would have be come President on tbe death of Taylor. But if, in the meantime, Allen had been nominated and elected, what would have become of Ew ing ? It would seem that the chance of one or the other must have been rather small. The Commercial seems to 1 ave some tardy misgivings on this point, lor it adds that Allen ought to have been nomioated in *52. an office ^Hstrceta, roar Peacbtn o. hesitation in sayieg that I Lav r.
