Irwinton, Ga-, Oct 10, 1873.
This vfilage is enlivened at present by a Su
perior Court—regular term—-Judge Bartlett
preriding, Tue proccedioga liavo been
marked with uncommon interest. Two mur
der cases have been tried, and other cases of
like nature stand on the docket. A negro boy
seventeen years of nge stabbed a young
negress; r-gait death. He was found guil
ty of manslaughter, the crime being done
m the beat of pas-don. A very decent look
ing man named McBea was found guilty of
murder, with recommendation to the mercy
of the Court last evening. He had shot and
killed a negro man under circumstances indi
cating great coolness of purpose to “wipe
out’* his victim. The principal witnesses for
ike prosecution were two negro women, one
the wife of the dec*used, who bore the infliction
of the most searching cross-2Tftminntion with
out developing any discrepancy. The Solicitor,
Col. Preston, conducted the prosecution with
much ability, while tho defense called out all
the skill and power of Col. Lofton, of Macon. }
McBea is a fine looking man, about 35 years
of ago, of Scotch type as bis name indicates, :
with a nature ready to over-boil with wrath, !
and deadly in revenge as his whole appear-1
.ince betokens.
A little incident in the court on Wedncs lay ;
elicited some amusement. A small “lively” j
looking man named Cass, of Celtic blood and j
a charming touch of what General Scott once j
notably termed “the rich Irish brogue,” was
one of the special bailiffs of the court. His
physical system being somewhat out of order,
his morning bittern had got into his head, and
his efforts to repress disorder finally degenerat
ed into something Judge Bartlett mistook for
disorder itself. Tho Judge firmly called the
official offender within the bar. His redden
ed eyes drooped beneath the se arcliicg official
g lance. His responses to juci ial questions
ad an inebriate thickness of tonguo which
the aforesaid “brogue” lias elsewhere, now
a nd then, exhibited.
“You arts drunk,' 1 remarked tho Bench.
