THE LANDING BOATS AND &DSP1TAL ARRANGE
MENTS.
From the London Dolly Telegraph, September 2t.
A novel aspect was presented on Suturor.y
by the large pier at the Royal Arsenal, Wool
wich, being covered fr« m end to tnd with
boats tor the Ashantce expedition. These
boats, twelve in number, which *re for landing
the troops on the Gold Coa>t, will each accom
modate thirty men, and resemble in size the
pinnaces ol a mau-of-war. They were made
and supplied under a pressing contract, with
in 18 days, and another dozen were ordered
at the same time to be sent in within 25
days. They are strongly bnt ronghly boiii,
and will each cost about £00. One hundred
and fifty oars or puddle* accompany them.
There is always a high surf all along the Gold
Coast, and no b ats bnt surf boats cau depend
npon landing in safety. The Bonny, which
takes them oar, has two suri boats of her
own. built in the same shape as these, bn-
smaller, and she also cunies two life boats.
Gangs of nat’ ves aro usually hired to land
goods and passengers, and nndcr their skiltul
management it is seldom that one of these
snxf boats ships a sea. The lading of the
Bonn} wtf* finished on Saturday by putting
on board the remainder of the 100 barrack
lint*, which aro being sent oat to form an
encampment for the troops. Tho doors and
other parts of each hut bear corresponding
nnmb^w, and the materials being very bulky,
speedily took up all the room there was to
spate in the ship, except a space reserved in
the magazines lor 100 tons of small-arm am
munition, which will bo taken on board to
day. Among the last things embarked on
Saturday were fifty cases ol jam.-, jellies and
preserved fruit* for the hospitals, and the
large onantity of medical comforts as well as
