Our column* were so crowded yesterday that our

the second class theatres of the Bowery and from the
Concrt sa oons of New York generally, tho perform
ance did not rise to tho bight of ordinary bad. Wo
would not notice it all, indeed, but for the fact theta
few ladies attended, some of whom left the hail as soon

few others present would have left had they not been
too embarrassed to rise from their seats and take their
departure. To the average ward politicians and thiir
immediate supporters ot the slimes and alleys, the
performance ass doubtless acceptable; but to respect
able people it was simply disgusting. While there a as
nolhifg positively nasty about the pieces, tho general
character of the entiro show told of the Bowery. Tnere
were lege, and not bad lookinu ones it must be said—
but legs without grace and without art. As for the
acting, it was ridiculously poor. Donbtless there wore
people who felt highly delighted—for instance the
critic of th6 other paper, who wrote ecstatically about
U, after severely denouncing the elephant's tail at the

DEMOCRATIC MEETING.

last vight, and were called to order by the President,
Mr. C. W. Wells, who explained the object of the
meeting to be the appointment of an executive com -
mittee to serve on the central committee. Tha fol
lowing gootlemen constitute that committee:

H. K. Shackelford.
Cspt. 8. D. Hasiott introduced a resolution request
ing the Central Committee to take into consideration
the proptinty of keeping tbe polls open on the day of
nomination from 11 o’clock a. at. to 7 o’clock f. m.
This resolution, after some discussion, was adoptep.
Iu response to calls Col. Geo. T. Fry and others
made vigorous and telling speeches, which were well
received. The speech of CoL Fry, who is one of the
finest orators in tho city, was ospec ally interesting
and in accordance with the true democracy cf the
First Ward.

sence until Tuesday.
The trial oi the case of Atlanta Medical College vs.
Wallace A* Alexander, Bill, &c.,, consumed nearly the
whole day. It was argued by Col. Robert Baugh and
Col. T. P. Westmoreland for cotnpliiuant, and by B.
Abbott and Col. L. E. Bleckley for defendant.
After an absence of an hour tbe jury returned a
verdict, declaring the Sheriff’s deed to defendants null
and of no effect, and perpetually enjoining tho defend
ants from taking possession.
The case of W. R. Phillips vs. James F. Cooper was
tried. Veidict for plaintiff. Glenn A Son for plain
tiff ; N. J. Hammond and J. T. Cooper for defendant.

Dr. A. y. Spradlicg was on yesterday arrested under
warrant, charging him with larceny after trust in
converting property of his niece. Thee iso was in*
vestisisted before Justice W. P. Hammond and the
defendant was required to give bond in the sum of
$500 for his appearance at the Superior Court. Colo-
nol H. J. Sprsyberry appeared as counsel for the
prosecution and Captain J. M. McAfee for tbo de
fendant.
STATION HOUSE REPORT.
William White was arrested on a charge of larceny,
and will be tried to-day. It is alleged that hs stole
twenty dollar* in currency from a countryman.
Five arrests had been made for offenses against tha
city up to 12 o’clock last night. At the Police Court
three parties were triod, one of whom, a woman, was
fined $25 and costs.

TEMPERANCE FOR THE COLORED PEOPLE.
At its recent seesion in Augusta the Grand Lodge
•r Georgia, Independent Order of Good Templars,
made provision for the organization of lodges of True
Reformer*, s temperance organization for the colored
people, with a ritual entirely separate and distinct
frem thri of the Good Templars, and placed the sup-
pliee in the hands of the Grand Woithy Chief Tem
plar, Iiev. L. R. GtrsRnef of Rome, who is authorised
iy send them out to the Lodge Deputies throughout
Ike State, with power to organise the colon d people
iat> lodge*. The ritual is said to be very well adapted

THE KNIFE.
Samuel McGruder and another employee ol Dr. An-
gier. (both colored), engaged in s spirited dispute on
last Monday night, which resulted in a rather reriou*
cutting sffrsy. The scene cf action was Dr. Angler's
Pence de Loon Springs. McGruder rays that the at-
took was both unexpected and unprovoked. He was
walking off, thinking the matter was at an end, when
he saw this rn»» approaching him with s knife in his
hand, and before ho had time to mak* any d-fence, the
negro struck him with the knife, rutting him through

long. The wound Inflicted, though very painful, is
pronounced by Dr. H. D'Alvigny, who dress'd the

BURGLARY'.
Ga Mond-ty night thieves entered two residences on
Powers atreet, and stole from one table linen and a
