CONCERNING THE LOSS OF HIS S63.000—WHAT ARE HIS POLITICAL PE03P1SCT8—TIIE COMING CAMPAIGN IN TEN NESSEE. Correspondence of the Courier-Journal. Nashville, October 11, 1873. He did not entertain nig gardly, nor was he mean or stinted ns to his personal expenses; and the fact that he could save sixteen or eighteen thousand a year from his salary, gives the lie to the assertions of the partisans of President Grant that a man can not live comtortably in the Presidential office on a salary of twenty-five thousand a year. He can never reach the desired goal, for no Legislature that can be elected in Tennes see will ever send Horace Maynard to the Senate. Neither do I believe that by any possibility he cao be elected to the Governor- 1 ship, but the Republicans seem determined ; to make the trial. They arj much encouraged I by the election of Kercheval to the office of | Mayor in this city a few days ago. In that j election the Republicans made a clear gain j of seven hundred votes. The same ratio all ! over the State would give them the Governor ship, Maynard is their strongest man. He is their ablest man. Indeed, we would have 1 to look about among tbe Southern Republi cans a good deal to find one the equal of j Horace Maynard. He is a selfish, cold man, having about ns much feeling for bis fellow men as a herse; but he is an able man. His record is not good on the back pay question; he voted for the bill, and took it; and this will make against Him among the East Tennessee Republicans, who claim to be honest; but they can not shelve him on that account, for his brains they must have lo keep the party together and afloat. But can the Democrats be brought to the support of Johnson, yon may ask, sufficiently to give him the nomination? THE SENATORIAL RACE. There will be a great straggle over the Sen- atorship next year. There will bo about a dozen aspirants, each one with some chances of success. The Johnaon men will, of course, be cn hand with*“their man,” and he may be the long pole that will knock tbe persimmons although the chances are against him.
