At present, the malady is subsiding. Some
physicians think the disease is spreading
slowly, though now there are scarcely eight

The following are the cases of two physi
cians :
Mrs. Mary Painter, very sick with black
vomit.
Major Bruton, in no danger at present.
Henry Sadberry, colored, mild case.
Jesse Brockett, no danger at present.

have given notice to their workmen of a suspension of
tin payment of wages until such time as money can
be collected. The company will guarantee to its em
ployees all necessary supplies to tho extent of their
earnings.
A dispatch from Cohoes,NewYork, says that the clos
ing of Harmon’s cotton mills was not owing to finan
cial difficulties or anything else connected with money
stringency; it was merely the fulfillment of an annual
custom.
The Danforth locomotive works, in Patterson, em
ploying five hundred hands, will soon stop; also
National Board of Trade—Inter-State Regu
lation of Transportation.
Chicago, October 26, 1373.
At a met ting of the National Board of Trade, an
amended report of the Transportation Committee was
submitted, and the following propositions were made:
1. That Congress may prevent unjust State restric
tions upon inter-S f ate commerce, but that protection
to the people of tho Slats should bo secured by the
Legislatures and the courts.
2. Rejoicing over the improvement of the Welland
and St. Lawrence Canals by Canada and New York
canals, and favoring the Mississippi River improve
ment.
3. Referring the question of double track railroads
from east to west, and questions germain, to Execu
tive Council for future consideration.

The forces of the State Congress of Ccalula have oc
cupied Saltillo since the defeat of Gen. Sespeda, the
deposed Governor, who has gone to Piedras Negras
with about sixty followers.
Business in tho State of Coalula is generally sur*
pended, awaiting a solution of the local difficulties.

The Government paid three-quarters of a million
question cf State lights, the report was amended so
as to ask Congress to exercise such power as the Con
stitution authorizes for the regulation of lhe United
States commerce.
Tho vote on the first proposition was yeas twenty-
six, nays sixteen.
The defeated sido wanted a two-third vote.
The first and second propositions were unanimous
ly adopted.

has sixty head of hones and mules.
Colonel Lewis Tumlin, of Bartow county, is one of
the wealthiest planters in Georgia, and is the architect
of his own fortune. His property (mostly plantations)
in Bartow county alone, is worth about $14,000. He
cnltivated on his plantations in Burtow county this
year two hundred acres in cotton; four hundred and
twenty-five in wheat; eighty in oats, and two buodred
and fifty in corn.
Several years ago citton was almost unknown in
Bartow. This year there are twenty-five planters in 1
that county who planted over 100 acres in cotton.
Seven planters of Bartow cultivate each over 100 ,
acres iu wheat.
Sixty-four planters of Greene county cultivate each j
over 100 acres in cotton.

Hawkins, who Lad two polygamic wives, and was
prosecuted by his first wife for adultery in the Dis
trict Court, and convicted and sentenced to three
years in the penitentiary, obtained his liberty yester
day by judgment of the Supreme Court, based on the
Engelhardt decision that a United States Marshal can
not serve a venire in causes tried under the statutes
of the territory.

New Yoke, October 27, 1878.
Wm. Scanlon, aged 18, was stabbed and killed by
Jas. McMahon, aged 16, this afternoon. Scanlon
owed McMahon fifty cents which led to a quarrel,
when Scanlon beat McMahon over the head. McMa
hon went to a neighboring grocery and stoic a cheese
knife and stabbed Scanlon in the left shoulder.

A colored thief was shot in Bainbridge on
the 2lst inst, while trying to effect an escape.
On the same day there were four deaths from
yellow fever in that township.
The Washington County Fair opened last
Wednesday under the most favorable auspices.
Covington school girls generally gave their
pin money to the Memphis and Shreveport
s offerers.
Covington boasts that she has not a single
loafer within her limits. All her young men
are at work.
Mr. James Griffin is now entitled lo the
championship among the bird hunters of
Newton county. In seventeen shots he killed
fiteen birds. The birds were all killed on the
wing, and most of them shot in high grass
and swampy ground.

mously resolved to reduce waxes ten per cent. The
masters thick it will be difficult to keep the furnace*
