AT THE PA*K OH irKDiT, At sn early hour Sunday Morning all Macon mas no t wakeful and abroad than is ever seen upon the Sabbath daj. Breakfast was dispatche d in a burry— ^ “with a lick and a promise”—and the people poured J along the lower streets in the direction of the Fair grounds, or crowded around the passenger and freight depots to see who and what was coming in. The hotels and private residences were already wide open for the reception of friends. A portion of the executive committee had flattered themselves that they would have a little time to rest, as they had been working hard during the week, but all who were not on the ground at aeven o’clock re ceived an inexorable order to go down immediately; and go they had to. ON THE OHOUKD9. A very proper and a very peremptory order bad been issued excluding every one save thoee who had arti cle* for exhibition and who bad season tickets from tbjj gates. The polic 3 and the gate keoper s obeyed it lit erally, and unless you come under one or the other yon had to either slip in by swiming the river, or stay out. But the good humored excluded crowd took it good netnredly and either rambled about the plane in front of the gates watching the stock passing in as did those left out of Noah’s Ark, or went off and drowned themselves in other scenes around the city. Of course the scene presented aronnd the grounds and within the exhibition rooms was that of more or less confusion. Bat after all there was none other than that presented upon the reception and shipment of goods npon ar y business street of a large city. The Executive CommitUee, tho Superintendents, with their clerks, all knew their duty, and as faat as anything arrived. It was sent to the place allotted for it weeks ago, there unpacked, placed in cases upon stands or suspended upon walls. The hammer and the saw sounded throughout all the buildings, in most instances wielded by merchants and private persons fixing up shelves, counters and stands for the proper exhibi tion Of their own wares. In the Cobb and Bibb county rooms they were work ing like beavers. But already these departments are flashing with their brightest jewels. Piles of boxes were still lying aronnd the floor, waiting for position. Zn the county displv the contest will be hard-fought to the end. The city of Macon has stripped all its private fine art galleries of their choicest gems, whilst its fields, orchards, workshops, factories and mercan tile houses have sent forward the finest they can pro duce. So has Cobh, so has Pike, so has Clayton. We saw Mr. Whitlock, of Cobb, in the middle of a car load of boxes, taking ont their contents and di recting his assistants what to da with them, watching every movement and the arrangement of the minutest article sent by bis whole county to the great fair. Along the horse stalls owners and grooms were busy . carrying, washing, rubbing, trimming and putting their noble animals in order. It is hard to tell how m&oy animals are here. We believe the three or four hundred stalls on the grounds are all fall, whilst it is known that many more are in the livery stables, and at other points aronnd the city. As stated In your paper yesterday. Bibb county very properly withdrew her stock and gave up the room to strangers. Bat It will all be forthcoming npon each day when called for. In the poultry yard all the coops received had been filled and placed npon the benches. Bat there ap peared to be as many more lying aronnd the ground ia their boxes, waiting attention. The expression is not extravagant, that this will be and is even now the grandest display of ponltry ever witnessed in the Volte 1 States. The plucky little Bantom, look ing like a top on Sunday morning, the gamect of the game, the biggest Shanghai, the bronsed gobbler weighing forty pounds, thirty- five coops from Oneida county, New York, alone, a display of fifty in one frame work and to be seen at ono view, by Mrs. Bigley, of Bibb county, together [ with a hundred others, which will all be more mi nutely described in these columns hereafter. THE OPRXXNG DAT—HONDA?. As on yesterday, the people of Macon were in the nireels at an early hour this morning. Every train came in crowded with visitors, who at once, and as a matter of conrse, jumped into haoks and went off to their quarters for the purpose of changing linen and getting a good breakfast. As we have all agreed to •‘put the big pot in the little one” this week, or, in other words, to give our friends the best we have, they all no doubt enjoyed their first meal. RAIN AT LAST. At 8 o’clock the heavy clonds, scudding before a strong Southwest wind, commenced pouring oat a welcomo rain, and the moment of closing this dispatch, 9 a. m., it continue;, and promisos to last long enough to pnt cod to the intolerable dost. It will of course some what check the reception of the finer grades cf goods that would otherwise be sent down to-day. But that is no matter, there are enough now for one Stats Fair. THE ATHENS BAND. The splendid brass band, composed of colored men from Athens, came into the city Saturday night. It passed down Fourth street at 8 o’clock this morning, and with the assistance of those in the city, and the hands of the military companies, will give ns plenty cf good music during the we<k. OPENING DAY. At ten o’clock this morniug the clouds cleared away after leaving a gentle sprinkle and a co?l atmosphere, .fast enon^h to make the park and the city pleasant to view. Goods poured into the hills of reception where everything was found ready for their reception, and wiih clock-work precision, were transferred to their allotted quarters. The number in attend- i once, at upon all the first days, was small, ' bat the city is crowded with strangers to-night and every train arriving swells the number. At three o’clock this afterooon the pacing race for horses came off. Whitlock’s hot be. Mack, won the race in 2:46. Banner and Flyisg closed distanced. The trotting race was won by Albion in 2:54)^. The time made by tbe horses entered ia regarded as slow. This is con sidered ss only a commencement. It is known that fo there are some of the fastest in tbe United States on ^ the.’gronods and will appear daring the week. The track is in floe condition. To-morrow the grand exhibition of our old Em press mother, Georgia, will be fully under way. It Ss impossible to prepare an elaborate descriptive article before Thursday’s Herald. J. W. Chick, a victim of the Southwestern Railroad collision, died at 5 o'clock this afternoon. His re mains will be sent to Virginia via Atlanta. Mayor’s Cosrl. Tbe Mayor had a large crowd of delinquents before him this morning. We did not have time to stay and bear the result in each case, bat the following names were upon tbe docket: Aaron Bison, violating license ordinance. Robert White, stealing and disorderly. Caleb Brown, drunk. Sam Lester, the same old case of vagrancy. Bendy Wilkinson, drank. Dennis Murphy, misdemeanor. It is not at all unnatnal to suppose that his Honor will do a first-class wholesale and retail business dar ing the week. I Increase of tbe Police.
