HOW HE LOVED HPB.
Saturday Evening, Feb. 8, 1868.
Mr Precious Husband:—The closing lines
of yours from Delaware City, received to-day,
are there words: “I trust you so utterly; I
bnild upon you ho entirely; I love you so de

strength now go out toward you with unutter

HOW CONVENTIONS ARE CARRIED IN LOUISIANA I
\
[New Orleans a ieiynne, Aug. 7.]
About twelve o’clock the delegates wander
ed in slowly and loafed, cigar in band, around
the room in a careless manner. Whisky
seemed to have instilled some artificial ht*
into the convention, for the delegates boon be
came noisy and obstreperous even before the
assembly was called to order. It took quite a
lively rat-a-tatiDg of the chairmau’s hammer
to get even a temporary quiet so that a com
munication from the Committee onCreden-
Liale could re id, asking f >r more time, as
it was not yet able to report through press of
busineps.
Even such ft mild and unimportant ques
tion as adjournment aroused the latent fury
of the meeting. It »y, Green and others star
ted the tumult, which scon held high revel.
The president, finding order impossible, re
signed his seat and trotted up and down the
platform like an excited and imprisoned bear.
ANOTHER ADJOURNMENT.
Finding that all appeals in behalf of the
Republican party produced not a second in
termission ot the nois% the president resumed
his seat and called for the vote of adjourn
ment. The howls—for there was no voting,
nothing but hewls and sbonts—were interpre
ted to mean adjoar ment to three o’clock,
and this being announci d, there was a simul
taneous rush lor the door. The hall was soon
cleared and the delegates marched off to en
joy the pleasure* of a convention dinner.
THIRD SESSION.
At three e’clock the third meeting wns rill
ed to order. It was soon evident thai these
many’ recesses were demoralizing; that the
three hours of recess had been spent in drink
ing fiery waisky and listening to fiery bar-
angiue. A fierce ghmor was iu almost ev
ery eye, aud a terrific war was apparent.

The report of the Committee on Credential*
was read amid unexampled decorum. Every
one felt sufficiently interested to keep quiet.

At one time there wore at least
A HUNDRED COUPLES FZHHTING,
hitting at each other with their finks, or tryirg
with uneasy, nervous, jira jam tremblings to
get a good aim at some choice leader of tbe
other side.
About twenty police rnshed into the room
and succeeded in arresting a dozen or so of
the delegates. Iustead, however, of bein^
able to Aceomplisb any good, they were
rather roughly treated themselves. Hergeant
Gray, at their head, succeeding in knocking

Green, R R. Ray* William Vigers, William
Weeks, Frank White, ami a dozen others

Several persons were slightly injured; White,

and some of tbe delegates showed wonderous
