“ lie just , and fear not."
lire at Athens.— lt ia with painful regret that
tvo announce the destruction by fire, of a large
I portion of Franklin College. The extensive
K .four story brick building last erected, together
if with iliu Library, and various Astronomical and
Mathematical Apparatus, Ac. &c. contained in
H it, was consumed on the morning of the 23d
I instant. The lire broke out between 2 and 3
I o’clock, A. M. and raged for about an hour and
I a half. It is supposed to have been occasioned
I Tiv accident. We understand that no Insurance
| was effected on any of the properly destroyed.
J Tliia is, indeed, a most serious injury to ibis
A energetic aud valuable Institution, whose bislo-
I i ry, from its origin, to its late higli state of itn-
M provemont and usefulness, is one of repeated
* difficulties, arising from extrinsic causes. We
I trust that the people of Georgia, now properly
1 estimate the value of ibis excellent Institution—
t its extensive and enlightening moral and literary
'§ jnlluencc upon the State, and upon its general
3 .character at home anil abroad. Now is the
I time for them to testify their regard for it; let
■ them lay aside all past prejudices and parly
A considerations, and with a regard for the good
* of tiie State alone, call upon their Roprescnta
| lives in the Legislature, now silting, to extend
J cur b a liberal and judicious relief to Franklin
J College, as will not only remedy tho disaster
-which has just befallen it, but givo it a cheering
-tin l l stimulating hope of a bright and prosperous
.future.

In this city, on Friday nvrnmg, the 223 inst. after an

the 47th year of his age. lie was born in the State ol' i
Virginia, ami at an early period of lift;, emigrated to this i
State, sinei; which, he has generally resided in the viciui- a
ty of, and in this city. The loss to society by the demise
of a man, so bound to it by all the generous sympathies
of our nature, and so useful in all the public mid domes-
tic relations of life—ull of which, even his enemies. (If
indeed he had any,) will concede, he filled with the great- <
est promptitude and fidelity, is incalculable. But who i;
eun estimate the loss, bill those who have felt it, of such .
a mau to a young und rising ftunily, consisting of a wile 1
and five children, suddenly deprived of a prop, the impor- <’
tauce of which, to them, is seldom tell until removed?— .
Such an one has left, together w ith a circle of friends, J
who are only qualified to estimate the magnitude of the *
chasm which is made by his death, audio mourn a loss,
truly irreparable.
Were it the purpose of the impotent pen, that indites
this brief tribute to Ihe. virtues of a friend, to pourtray in
their true colors, the extent and variety of his worth as a
man, citizen, friend, husband, father, brother, and mas- 1
ter—a volume would be required. It will suffice to say,
that the inscrutable decree of Omnipotence has seen cause -J
to remove to another and a better world, the subject of f
this notice •, be having while inhabiting this vale of tears,
eminently filled the character, so appropriately described
by the poet, us “ the noblest work of God” — an honest

and when the hopes and expectations of relatives and

ofthc youth, lie is by tiie mysterious, but all-wise and
good decree of Divine Providence, summoned to the place ~
prepared lor all living. To say of this interesting youth, *
that for strength of intellect, he* had but lew equals, is to r,
pronounce but justice to his memory—and that he had .
improved hi* time, and was held in high estimation by 1
his preceptors ami 'schoolmates, they will feelingly uc- n

has it fallen to the lot ofthc writer of this obituary notice *“
to announce the death of so deservedly and generally es- I
teemed a lady as Mrs. Thompson. During a period of 1
thirty-live years\since she left her native State. (Mary
land) she has made her residence in this place, where,
she frequently diliused around in Iter neighborhood the
glowing (lame of beneficence which she diligently fed,
from the abundance of her zeal und worldly goods. Be
ing descended of respectable parents, whose means were
nliluent, she had early opportunities, which site turned to i
useful occ. ’Uiit. At so advanced an age, all the disliu- •
finishing virtues, which give to religion dignity and bene
ficial etlect, and bestow on society character and improve- ji
meat, belonged to her In a peculiar degree. It can be .
truly said, that her virtues were many, her limits (If airy) *
lew; the ffirmer during life, had a salutary Influence on i
the society in which she mixed, while the latter never
drew her from the path of duty or the line of conduct. '
Her home, the purest temple of a woman’s fame—her <
homo was the scene in which she displayed with ole- |
gance the suavity of refined manners, the gravity of sin-
cere piety and the cmmnlsHeralion of unostentatious and 1
unfeigned charity; there, surrounded by her children and t
by her children’s children, like a second Scinpronia, the
virtuous mother ofthc Gracchi, she polished and improv-
ed them. The narrow views of sectarian prejudice nev
er clouded her understanding or never caused her to
wound the feelings of her dissenting acquaintances.- £
Tiie practical knowledge and dutiful'observance of her
religion, which she closely adhered to through life, shone
with edifying and striking lustre during her last illness. -
