is destined to save millions to the Govern
ment in the preservation of ships of war
from the dr>/ rot. ns well ns to stop tin
waste of valuable lives by diseases en
gendered from the foul air confined in
the interstices of the timbers of thus,
ships while exposed to n tropical climate.
We have not examined the model, but
rest oursungiiiiie anticipations ofits suc
cess in accomplishing those important
objects on the 'unequivocal testimony
of experienced nml r.eientille, navy otli
errs who examined it yesterday on its
exhibition by the inventor. The
rapid decay of our vessels of war, be
yoml that which attaches to Merelmnt
ships, is well known to bo caused by
their different constructions : the former
having their limbers necessarily of extra
size, mid so closely laid together, for
strength, as to prevent a circulation of
the air, which in its confined stole be
comes immediately deleterious to perish
able substances, and cutises what is fa
miliarly called the dry rut, in the ships'
timbers, requiring frequent and expen
sive repairs; while the latter being more
slightly constructed, a circulation of
air is admitted between the timbers,
mnl they are thus, to a degree, secur
ed from premature decomposition.—
Much sickness, too, is produced on board
of ships of war cruising in tropical c-li
mates, by the foul air escaping from its
eonfmeineiit between the timbers.
The removal of this frightful evil, this
uilenl but malignant foe to our navy, is
confidently asserted to be within the pow
er of Mr Langley’s Ventilator, and if so.
Mr. Langley will deserve the thanks ol
(tie nation, independently of the pecunia
ry reward to which so signal a public
service will justly entitle him. AVe shall
forbear to say more upon the subject nt
present. The model will he transmitted
to Washington by the cai liest opportuni
