LAUSAVMK, June i.
On the* i Brh of May, Mr.
X.e Breaux, a native of Bruffcls
jwrd ?2 and firfl lieutenant of
Kinfley's regiment of infantry,
who was ftalloned with that
corps near Adiarcio, on fhc
mountains of Sefi>», fet out on
a reconnoitring expedition, af
the headof adetachment of forty
men. He direfted his courfe
towards the valley of Aorta, in
orde* to difeover whether there
was anv truth in the rumours
relative to M'e intended tnvafion
of the French It had been
cirrulated in the Auflrian army
army that Buonanarfc was to
penetrate dire£llv into Pied
mont, by the Great St. Bernard,
but the report was not credited,
as the feafon was fo unfavoura
ble to the attempt, and the fnow
fo deep that this route was
thought altogether impra&ira
ble.
After a very difficult march
of the five days, thro* rugged
paths and over fiighrful preci
pices, lieuf. I e R’eux, found
himlrlfonthe 23d of May. be
tween five and fix in the even
ing, on the rapid didivity of a
mountain, which he defeendrd
by a Terpentine foot path, intend*
ing to proceed to Chatillon by
the village of St. Vincent. Here
be was fuddenly Oruck with the
appearance of five French Ge
nerals, and two guides, not more
than fix paces from him, all
crawling down the mountain
and leading their horfe*, with
the exception of one, in a grey
coat, and gold laced hat, without
a leader, who remained on
horfeback, and advanced at their
bead.
The Auftiian foldiers pre
fented their pieces the moment
they obferved the French offi
cers ; but their lieutenant or
dered them not to fire, preferinp
as he faid, the opportunity of
carrying furh a great and glo
rions p ize in fafety to the head
quarters of his corps. The ge
neral in the grey coat no fooner
obfeived them than he exclaim
ed*—See the Auftrians—there
are Auffrians here!” The two
guides at the fame time pointed
their carabines and called out,
•• who is there ?’* But the French
general ordered them not to fire,
and addreffing himfelf to the
young Auftiian officers, afleed
“ Who arc you ? what are you
about here ? where do you
come from? whatis the ftrength
of your detachment ? what is
the name of your regiment ?
what is your general's name ?
where is your corps ported,
&c. ? and feveral other quef
tions, to which the lieutenant
replied as he thought proper.
This converfation, which Lift
ed about half an hour, w as more
than once interrupted by the
Auflrian foldiers, who afked
thefe foldiers, whether they
ffiould not carry off their prize.
But the general in the grey coat,
in whom the reader will perhaps,
ere now, have recognized Buo
naparte, faid to the Auflrian
officer.-—'* Hitbnto, Sir, you
have rnnfidered me ycurprifon
{<cr; you, however, arc tmae;
lot dc rot be Ke'ry uneafy, 1
fhall take care of you and your
followers. At this moment
lieutenant I e Breux perceived
that be was funounded by
French Grenadiers.
The flrrt conful defired him
to retain his arms, and faid to
birr—-“ To night you (ball fup
with me at Chatillon, and to
morrow you fhall dine with me
in the city of Aofta.” This actu
ally took place. The officer, in
relating the ftory, obferved that
Buonaparte was extremely ab
rtemious, and that he remained
a very fhort time at table. After
dinner the fi: ft conful took him
into a private apartment, where
he convcrfed with him during a
quarter of an hour, on the force
and pofitions of the Auffrians.
At parting, the lieutenant affeed
permiflion to return home on
his parole—** 1 had already de
termined to fet you at liberty,
without requiring that you
rtiould be exchanged," faid Buo
naparte, He immediately made
his aid-de-camp Duroc, give
him a paflport for Paris, and
another for one of his foldiers to
attend him as a fervant. He
alfo gave him a letter to the
Minflcr of Police. He arnv
