Lady! in onr England’s story
There are names, we proudly say—
Names of women now in Heaven
Still our own, tho’ passed away;
But in all the shining record
Which the angels love to read.
Few can claim the earnest homage
By oar hearts to thee decreed.
Lady ! when to weeping households
Word of thy devotion came,
High and lowly called thee augei,
Wives and mothers blessed thy name
Where the rectory roses cluster;
Where the whitened cottage peers;
In the old manorial mansion,
Eyes were filled with thankful tears.
Lady ! when tho wounded soldier
Lifts his head ami looks on thee,
Hope will come and softly whisper,
“I may yet r.-cross the sea;’’
Yet return bis mother s kisses.
As she shudders at his sears,
Y’et behold a face still dearer,
Seen in dreams beneath the stars.
Lady ! thou hast left, for duty,
All that gives to lite its charm,
And we pray tnat God may keep the*.
YVith tny sisters, safe from harm—
Ever shall thy name and story
Cause the heart a blissful thrill;
When our warfare long is over
Aud our beating hearts are still.
Should this meet the eye of Miss Nightingale,
let her know that there are thousands of hearts
beating high in admiration of her heroic, praise
worthy conduct, sacrificing the comforts of an

And deemed the future like the present, fair ?
Should fortune frown on yonr defenceless head.
Should storms o’ertake your bark on life’s dark
sea,
Fierce tempests rend the sail so gaily spread,
When hope her syren strain sang joy fully—
Will ye look up, through clouds your sky o’ercast,
And say, “together we will hide the blast?”
Age. with its silvery locks, comes stealing on
And brings the tottering step, the furrowed
cheek—
The eye frum whence each lustrous gleam hgth
gone,
And the pale lips, with accents low and weak 1
Will ye then think upon your life’s gay prime,
And smiling, bid Love triumph over Time 1
Speak it not lightly ! O beware, beware,
’Tis no vain promise, no unmeaning word—
So men ami Angels list the faith ye swear,
And by the High and Holy One ’tis heard!
O, then kneel humbly at His altar now,
And pray for grace "to keep your marriage voicl"
1HOIROEVS PRIVATE LIFE.
The subjoined letter, addressed to Govenor
Wise, some weeks, since by Mr. Samuel LGou-
vernetir,, sun in l-nv of Mr. Monroe, places tha
public in possesion of some facts in reference to
the Ex-Bresident not. genera ly known, and will
serve to increase the respect and veneration hith
erto felt for one whose public and private virtues
were tested by the sevorest of all human ordeal*.
Petersville, Frederic County, )
Maryland, June 18, 1856. J
Sir: I have received a copy of a resolution of
the General Assembly of Virginia, providing for
“the removal of the remains of James Monroe ex-
President of the United States, from the public
burying-ground iu the city of New York to the
cemetery at the city of Richmond, Virginia, for in
terment ; provided that, upon inquiry, you deem
it proper, and such removal may meet with the
approbation of the family.”
The public life ot James Monroe is written in
the history of bis country. The events of his pri
vate life—few years indeed—are known to a few
surviving friends. On tne 4th of March, 1825, he
completed his second Presidental terra. He soon
commenced to reap the bitter fruits of a life de
voted to tiie best interests of his country regard
less ot his own. As a private citizen he emerged
from all his successive public trusts with poverty
as the emblem of his purity and the badge of all
his public honors. A loan from a near relative,
reluctantly accepted, realized after his death,
discharged the immediate demands in Washington,
and bore him aud his family to that residence in
which he had fondly hoped to end his days.—
Pressed to a melancholy degree by debts, almost
imperceptibly accumulated by time, with the oc
casional relief which two young relatives could
afford, he struggled manfully with adversity for
about five years. In the unexpected death of hi*
devoted wife, in Sepetmber, 1830, he realized the
fact that his cup of earthly sorrows was full to
the brim. She had. with enviable graces of per
son and mind, adorned every public position he
ever held. She had nobly participated in all his
troubles aud. with her sudden loss, ail the hope*
of his declining years faded rapidly before him—
A constitution of great original vigor exhibited
symptoms of decided decay, aud a mind nobly
endowed in active sympathy of gradual decline.—
His removal to New York was the result, of stem
necessity, not of choice. At the solicitation of
his family, in the residence of his yonngest
daughter, and in the society of his wife’s relatives
—herself a native of that city—he found all the
beautiful sympathies which earth affords. His
presence commanded universal respect. Public
meetings gave a new impulse to prompt action in
Congress on those claims which,in deep convic
tion of tliei. justice, he lias made apon bis conn-
try. In daily anxious suspense he awaited their
decision. The partial allowance it made came
too late for him. Postponements and angry de
bates, marked by that bitterness of party politics
which ever s eks a shining mark, had broken
down his noble spirit. The exhausted energies of
nature could rise no more' On the 4th otJaly,
1831, amidst all the exciting evidences of national
pride which maiked that day, associated now with
the deaths of A'lams, Jefferson, and Monroe, in
humble resignation to Divine will, without* groan
or sigh, he ceased to live on earth.
Let not the people of Virginia believe that hi*
honored remains were treated with neglect. In no
‘public burying ground.” in no “borrowed tomb”
do they lie. Iu a vault, originally purchased by
his daughters, in a beautiful private “cemetery,”
surrounded by many of the most respectable and
virtuous of his day. they have awaited the call of
his native State. Two sisters of his wile, one my
own dear mother, with others, relatives of her
family, have slept around him.
His death excited profound sympathy. The
city authorities of New York asked not the right ta
honor his memory, but the favor to bo permitted,
with appropriate ceremonies, to bury him at the
public cost. His body was attended by a train of
mourning relatives and friends from the humble
dwelling where he died, through streets hung with
emblems of public sorrow, to tho City Hall. A
noblo tribute to his worth, from eloquent lips,
lately closed forever, was pronounced over it in
the City Park. Funeral services before the as
sembled clergy, in one of the most venerable
churches, were performed by the presiding bishop;
a procession, civil and military, ot countless num
bers, witnessed the whole population of akity
draped m mourning, and hushed into solemn
silence, save when the plaintive dirge told the sad
office they performed, bore him to bis tomb.—7
Other similar spectacles may have exceeded this in
gorgeous display, hut in imposing solemnity it
never was surpassed.
When his remains shall again be brought to
light you will find them distinguished by thee*
