Safe At Home?
How sate Is your home?
Home Is generally thought of
as a safe place, but figures
on accidents Indicate that this
feeling may be a false sense
of security. In the United States
one person dies every 16
minutes as a result of a home
accident. One person is perma
nently disabled every four min
utes and someone Is temporily
disabled every seven seconds
by other home accidents.
Home accidents are caused by
both environmental and human
factors, says Miss Luclle Hig-

Among major factors causing
home accidents, she says, are
Improper use and maintenance
of equipment, careless house
keeping, physical impairment,
emotional instability, haste, fa
tigue and poor judgment.
Recent studies show that the
leading cause of fatal home ac
cidents are burns, explosions,
falls, mechanical suffocation,
firearms and poisons. The lead
ing type of non-fatal accidents
Is cuts.
Age, Miss Higginbotham con

in home accidents.
Falls are the leading cause
of accidents for children under

Synthetic blends are a boon
to our modern day fabrics but
they do present a problem In
sewing. Too often we are dis
appointed In a garment when
we have finished it because of
puckers or the seams popp
ing.
Be sure to use fine, sharp
pins and needles. Dressmaker
pins should be satisfactory. For
machine needles use about
a size 11. A size 14 machine
needle can be used for heavier
fabrics.
The thread can be merceriz
ed cotton or a synthetic such
as taslon, nylon or dacron.
You might have a difficult time
finding nylon or dacron thread
since the taslon is the newer
development. The size thread
should be standard—about size
50 or 60.
The machine should be ad
justed for both tension and pres
sure. The tension should be
slightly looser than usual. Syn
thetic blends have less tendency
to pucker if the tension on the
bobbin and spool are equal. The
pressure should be adjusted so
that the fabric won’t slip. But
remember that too heavy a
pressure leaves marks on the
fabric and makes sewing diffi
cult.
To help eliminate puckers and
fullness from set In sleeves,
take out all ease in excess of
one and one-fourth inch. Syn
thetic blends cannot be shrunk

enough to take care of more
ease than this. Make the ad
justment In the pattern by tak
ing a series of tucks in the
sleeve cap between the notches.
One other thing to remember
when stitching blends is to con
trol the speed of the machine.
A steady even pace feeds the
fabric through evenly.
