Officers and men of Company B, 560th Engineer Battalion
have just returned from a two-week training camp at Ft. Stewart,
Georgia. With Captain Clifton E. Marshall commanding, the 85
men and three officers did a magnlficant jobl
There is nothing easy about a two-week camp at Ft. Stewart.
The men realize this well in advance. Probably the hardest
part comes first, that of saying good-bye I As the men climb
upon the trucks the wives, children, and sweethearts look on.
It has always been hard to say good-bye but this time it appears
harder than ever. It is the first time away from their wives and
children for some of the men, others had never been on a National
Guard camp and knew not what to expect.
However, expectations were too low in most cases, for after
several days the men become adjusted to the daily training. They
know what is expected of them now, and they pitch in and work to
gether. Actually some of them learn to enjoy this change in
living.
The army expects a great deal from our engineers. There is
the land mine warfare which includes installing a defensive and
enemy mine field, the M4T6 floating bridge must be assembled and
disassembled, timer trestle bridges are built and destroyed, and
all engineers must know the importance and power of high
explosives.
The second week is spent on bivouac about 20 miles Into the
woods. While there men must pitch tents and dig foxholes for
themselves and their weapons. Night moves are held to see if
the men are alert and can move fast in case of enemy attack.
All in all camp is not too bad. There are the letters and tele
phone calls from home. There is racing, Indian wrestling, and
golfing in the late evenings, and near-by Savannah and Jkyl Is
land offer entertainment at night and on week-ends.
On Sunday the men return back to their home unit. Some have
blisters on their hands, others have scratches and red bugs on their
bodies. The men are tired and tanned. Some are almost exhausted.
This was the last camp for some of the men. They would be
discharged on their return. Other man had several camps to
make yet. The only memories of Ft. Stewart were on their uni
forms and boots where thev had walked and worked in the water
and mud. Other memories of Ft. Stewart were left behind in the
sand-covered foxholes and under the small shelter tents.
The men of Company B had done a good job, the victory had been
won.
Why should “dog days”
bother people? Enjoy summer
with flameless electric air conditioning
Take the bite out of summer’s muggy “dog
days’’ with mode-n electric air conditioning.
All air conditioners use some electricity. But
the best air conditioners use only electricity.
An electric unit consumes no oxygen; re
quires no costly fuel pipes, water pipes, water
towers or flues. Easily installed, it cools,
Spring-freshens and circulates air, controls
humidity . . . filters out unwanted dust and
pollen. Keeps you totally comfortable. Add
a room-size or a house-size unit—and another
step to wonderful total-electric living. Call
us or your favorite electric appliance dealer.
Ask how wc can pay up to$200 toward wiring
your house so you can live better electrically.

(Editor's note: We are work
ing toward obtaining a corres
pondent In each community of
the county to report the local
happenings each week. At that
time, the communities will be
listed in paragraphs by alpha
betical order. This perhaps
will save you time in finding
what the people in your commu
nity did. However we hope you
will become more conscious of
what the people of the entire
county have been doing.)
