(j^ AMERICAN NEWSPAPER REPRESENTATIVES
ATLANTA • CHICAGO • DETROIT • 101 ANOUts • NIW YORK
Tuesday, October 16, we must go to the polls again. The purpose
is to nominate a state senator to represent our district in the
Georgia legislature for two consecutive years. It will be a simple
ballot to vote throughout the state. However, we in the 17th Sena
torial district which includes the counties of Taylor, Talbot, Upson,
Macon, Schley, Marion, and Harris will have an even more simple
ballot to vote than most of the other districts in Georgia. In fact,
it will probably be the easiest ballot ever voted in any of these
counties.
The reason for this is that Garland Byrd’s name will appear on
the ballot alone. He has no opposition as a candidate for sena
tor from our district.
Here is how you will go about voting: After you are given your
ballot you will simply drop it in the ballot box. That is all that
is necessary. You won’t even need a pencil.
Now do not get the idea that it will not be necessary for you to
cast your vote. It is important that you vote even though you know
that Mr. Byrd Will be our senator.
First, voting is a privilege. Any good citizen should show his
love for his state and fellowman by casting his vote on all oc
casions. Secondly, we should be proud that the senator repre
senting our district comes from our county.
Let us show the counties of Talbot, Upson, Macon, Schley,
Marion and Harris that we appreciatve of Garland Byrd by going
to the polls in a record turn-out on election day. Encourage the
voters from your neighboring counties to also go to the polls.
Remind them that Garland Byrd is for Taylor County, the 17th
Senatorial district and all Georgians. Tell them how fortunate
we in this district should be to have the Lt. Governor to repre
sent us in the Georgia Senate.
Again, let me say that it is important to our county, the 17th
Senatorial district and the state of Georgia for you to go to the
polls on Tuesday, October 17. By going to the polls on election
day you will be showing respect and admiration to Lt. Governor
Byrd, and at the same time you will be exercising the greatest
voice of the American citizen, the voice of the ballot.

One interesting little incident
in the northern section of our
county the other day was the
discovery of something blue
in Ben Neisler’s field as he
went out to plow. Walking over
to inspect his new find, he found
a big blue balloon, fully in
flated, advertising the 63Chev-
rolets to be bought at Miller
Motor Company in Russellville,
Alabama.
After inspecting it he turned
it loose in the air and it sailed
away, destination unknown.
Small world todayl
Two days later, Mr. andMrs.
Neisler were walking in this
area near dusk and Mr. Neisler
almost stepped on a beautiful
golden colored rattlesnake.
Fetching the gun from the house,
Mr. Neisler killed it and added
16 more rattlers to his young
daughter’s collection.
There are two kinds of weak
ness, that which breaks and that
which bends.

This I Believe
1 have seen and talked with the
three enemy peoples of World
War 11-the Germans, the
Japanese and the Italians. It
lias always been my belief that
people everywhere are funda
mentally alike, and 1 think that
It is proved by the fact that these
three enemies are now our
allies, actual or potential. It is
fundamental that kindness will
be repaid with kindness, and
bate by hate.
We live in what Toynbee, the
great British historian, calls
"a time of troubles,” but I air,
happy with my time. Our gen
eration lias been bloodied by two
wars, and prehaps faces a third,
even more frightful. But I would
not have lived another time, for
there have compensations, as
small as flowers offered in
friendship, and as inspiring as
the birth of the United Nations.
If I live in a time of troubles,
I also realize that I live in a
time of great opportunity. As a
reporter and foreign corres
pondent I was privilegeed to
watch history being made, to
see events which have helped to
decide whether civilization will
stand or fall. I have seen
time and again how tremendous
ly important the character of
ordinary individuals could be
in determining whether our
children would live and be proud
of us. I know that I cannot
escape my responsibility to put
the lessons I have learned into
action. With all my faults and
frailties, I have a duty to myself
and to the world I live in. Per
haps 1 will never know just how
important it is, yet 1 must so
live as never to be ashamed of
how I fulfilled it.

The Combination Skin
Many women have what is
known as a combination skin.
The forehead, nose and chin are
oil with large pores and
blackheads, but the rest of the
face is dry and fine textured.
This situation can be a real
problem and is best fought by
cleansing three times dally and
by the reduction of fats and oils
in thy diet.
Use a good soap and water
treatment with thorough rinsing
first with warm water and then
with cold for two of the three
cleansings. Use a complextion
brush on the oil streak only.
The third cleansing can be done
with a liquid or granular pre
paration. Cleansing cream will
only aggravate the condition.
A moisturizer will relieve taut
ness afterwards.
An excellent facial masque
for the large pored skin is the
milk of magnesia masque.
Cleanse face and cover with the
thick white substance found a-
round the sides of the milk of
magnesia bottle. Relax and
let dry for about twenty minutes.
Rinse off with tepid water and
moisturize the skin. Use no
more than twice a week.

Good Sportsmanship
Good sportsmanship is an as
set to harmonious living. Bas
ically its rules are the same
in the playing of any competi
tive game:
Always play your best. Never
stop trying when you are far be
hind.
Quickly accept the rules and
playing conditions of the others.
Be quick to give your oppo
nent the benefit of a doubt.
Avoid delays in playing by
deep thought or battle strategy.
Never show impatience at an
other player who delays the
game. This attitude is even
more unsportsmanlike.
Apologize at once for a broken
rule whether or not the oppo
nent noticed it. Then correct the
error.
Never criticise a partner for
a poor play. Soothe his feelings
if he apologizes for one by say
ing, “1 should have done the
same thing.’’
At the end of a game a bit
of polite conversation closes the
matter. The loser gracefully
admits defeat by saying, “That
was a good game.’’
"You just had bad luck,” re
plies the modest winner.
“No question of luck at all.
You played well,’’ and the loser
ends the converstion.
There should be no comments
about why one lost or won.
