Reforestation of idle land is
an important step in any forest
management program. The land
owners in Taylor County are
fortunate in that much of our
land reforests itself naturally
through reseeding. There are
some areas however, that need
to be planted by hand or by
mechanical means.
During the 1961-62 tree
planting season, there were ap
proximately 1,591 thousand
seedlings planted in Taylor
County from unrsery stock of
the Georgia Forestry Com
mission. We are now in the
early stages of the 1962-63
planting season. Let’s make
every effort to put more of our
idle land to work. If you have
not yet placed an order for seed
lings, you may wish to do so at
an early date.
Sometimes we hear that we
may be planting too many trees.
I doubt this. Our planted stands
make up a very small per
centage of our total woodland
area. Most folks who have plant
ed stands of trees are mighty
proud of them.
When planting your trees be
certain to keep the roots moist
at all times and do not plant
unless there is plenty of mois
ture in the fields. Plant the
seedlings at about the same
depth they were growing in the
nursery bed or perhaps „ little
deeper. I believe we lose more
trees from shallow planting than
from any other cause. Do not
leave any of the root system
above the ground. To do so
means certain death for the
seedling.
We recommend a spacing of
about 8’ x 8' or perhaps 6’
x 10’. Each of these spacings
will give us approximately 700
trees per acre, a desirable
number for most land .
A recent survey of Georgia’s
forest areas revealed that there
are more than 1 1/2 million
acres of idle land that is not
in position to reseed naturally.
Some of these idle acres are in
Taylor County. Some of them
may be on your farm. Re
member that the second step of
our six-step forest management
program is reforesting idle
land.
some of us still fail to recognize
the importance of lime in crop
production. Lime pays off in
many wasy’ (1) It grows more
and better crops, (2) It helps
produce nitrogen for legumes,
(3) It helps tilt of your soil,
(4) It gives health to you and
your livestock, (5) It makes
your mixed fertilizer more ef
fective by making available the
essential elements, speeding up
action of soil bacteria and de
creasing leaching.
Soil test bags, tools and in
formation sheets may be ob
tained from the County Agent’s
Office free of charge.
INITIAL SIGN-UP UNDER THE
1963 ACP LET
The County Committee has
determined that the initial sign
up period for reqesting cost
sharing on practices to be car
ried out under the 1963 Agri
cultural Conservation Program
will be January 2-31, 1963.
Mr. H. A. Sealy, Chairman
of the ASC County Commit
tee, states that the 1963 list of
ACP practices will be mailed
to farm operators prior to
January 2. The 1963 practices
are similar to the practices
contained in the 1962 ACP pro
gram but practices beneficial
to wildlife have been added.
Mr. Sealy urges each farm
operator to review the prac
tices contained in the 1963 pro
gram and to file a request for
cost-sharing assistance on con
servation practices needed on
the farm. Under the operating
procedure, the County Commit
tee will give priority to requests
for assistance filed during the
initial sign-up period.
The Agricultural Conserva
tion Program provides financial
assistance to carry out needed
SOIL TEST - NOW
For spring plantaings, soil
samples should be taken now.
The reason for this is that it
takes about three months after
application of lime for it to be
come fully effective in the soil.
Farmers in Taylor County
are becoming more aware that
increased fertilization pays, but

FARMERS APPROVE QUOTAS
ON COTTON AND PEANU1S
The preliminary returns
from the referendums held on
December 11 to determine if
marketing quotas will be appli
cable to the 1963 cotton crop
and the 1963 - 1965 peanut crops
showed an overwhelming vote in
favor of marketing quotas on
both crops. Cotton growers
favored marketing quotas by a
96.7 percent vote of the 29,510
cotton farmers voting, and pea
nut growers favored market
ing quotas by a 96.4 percent of
the 13,773 peanut growers vot
ing.
The favorable vote means
that the full level of price sup
port will be in effect on the
1963 co.tton crop and the 1963,
1964, 1965 crops of peanuts
with stiff marketing quota
penalities applicable to excess
cotton and peanuts.
Voters in Taylor County
favored marketing quotas on
cotton by a vote of 179 to 4,
and on peanuts by a vote of 113
to 5. Over fifty percent of
the eligible voters in this coun
ty voted in the referendum.
