Hotshotz Take
Second Place In
Tournament In
LaGrange
By Jizammie J. Griggs
After a lot of hard work and
determination, they finally
made it to the dance. Taylor

For the Lady Hotshotz, im

tournament they continue to
get better. Now that some of
the girls are transitioning to
middle school and high

Congratulations, Lady

Wet Weather?
1 don't think that I have ever gotten to talk about wet weather since I started, but J thought
I might let you know what to be looking for in the home landscape. In the garden, you
definitely want to pay attention to fertility. With all of this rain, most of your preplant
fertilizer has probably been used up or leached from the root zone of the plants.
Nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, and sulfur are readily leached from the soil, so we
need to think about replenishing them. Nitrogen can be applied in many forms, ammonium
nitrate (34-0-0) or potassium nitrate (15-0-15) are two good choices. If you use ammonium
nitrate, you can get your potassium from muriate of potash (0-0-60). To add some sulfur, all
you need is to add some epsom salts, which is nothing more than magnesium sulfate. Even
in years where we don’t have a bunch of rain, epsom salts are beneficial to most garden
plants.
The other major problem that we are seeing is fungal disease and seedling diseases. There
is not much that you can do against the latter. Other than quality seeds and transplants,
there is only one product la
beled for at planting treat
ments to prevent root dis
eases, and that is Terraclor
75% WP.
For other diseases, there are
a few options. There is
chlorothalonil, mancozeb, and
copper containing products.
All of these are protectants, so
they need to be applied prior
to the onset of disease. They
can be used to slow a disease
in some instances, but under
our current conditions, they
would probably be of little use
in a bad disease situation.
Under current conditions, it
will probably be necessary to
apply fungicides ever 7 days.
As we dry out, you can stretch
that interval to 14 days.
When applying fungicides to
vegetables, it is important to
be aware of the pre harvest in
terval. This is the time be
tween application and when
you can legally harvest the
vegetables.
Having to deal with dis
eases in the garden and land
scape is never fun, but it does
mean that we are getting
pretty good rainfall, and I
can't complain about that. I
would also rather have to
apply a little more fertilizer
and use a couple of fungicides
than deal with drought con
ditions. The good thing about
all of this rain is that it
should help with some of our
insect pests like mites, white-
flies, and aphids. Contact me

Healthcare vs. Sickcare
By Wade Yoder, www.wadeyoder.com

Early detection by the medical field should have never attempted to step into the shoes of prevention, it is inca
pable of yielding the same benefits.
Navigating healthcare and healthcare options is something we have been hearing a lot about, and it can be unnerv
ing, to say the least! We have a huge aging population, which will he stretching our healthcare system and capabili
ties to the max, and it’s enough to give all of us concern as to what kind of care we can expect, if we, ourselves, or
family need healthcare services.
It really impacted me years ago, when I read an article in the Wall Street Journal- where it said that “there are
enough people that die each week from medical mistakes to fill 4 jumbo jets.” This does not include the ones with
temporary or lifetime complications from medical mistakes. As the system gets loaded with more and more patients
due to our aging population, we need to consider that quality of care may decline due to wait times and less time for
individual care by the healthcare professional.
We have overused and abused medical access for years and have grown a dependency that we need to assess and
possibly back off from. We can decrease our dependency, oft times, by changing some lifestyle habits, and we can
track down some answers simply by asking ourselves a few simple questions:
1. What have I been doing wrong?
2. What have I not been doing right?
3. Flow long has I or 2 been going on?
4. What can I do to correct this? Asking ourselves these questions, and answering them honestly, can put us on track
for decreasing our dependency on others for our health.
Self-diagnostic questions we can ask ourselves: Have I been getting adequate water - have I been getting plenty of
activity and exercise - have I been eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables every day, and have I
been getting good, deep sleep?
We have an internal doctor (our immune system) that works 24 x 7 x 365, and it isn’t practicing medicine - it knows
exactly what’s wrong and what it needs to repair and rejuvenate us with. Oft times, all this internal system asks
from us is a better diet, more water, more activity, and better rest.
1. When you feel fine, and your doctor is constantly trying to get you to come back for checkups, etc., remember this
is a business to them, but for you, it’s subjecting yourself to a gathering place of sick people, many times unnecessarily.
2. When it comes to our medicine(s), we need to know the purpose of each and every one.
3. Learn all the side effects of each medicine, before using it.
4. If you’re on medicine(s), question yourself and your doctor, to see if there is anything in your lifestyle that you can
change or add to lessen the need for the medicine over time?
If we can change our thought pattern from how we will be able to access healthcare, to a more defensive play of how
I can keep myself from needing the healthcare system, we can save ourselves a lot of down time, as well as exposure
to other pathogens, etc. while we are in doctors’ offices, hospitals, and waiting rooms. This helps create healthcare
independence, and that is much better than healthcare dependence!
